I understand the need for water to "spread the wealth" when it comes to taste. You go 151 and you are burning on every swallow.

Kind of like hot sauce without any FOOD to put it on!

But what bugs me is the precise % that every single brand gets. You would think that, like bear, you would get a wide variance depending on your desired flavor and whether or not your serving recommendation is on the rocks/soda/water or not.

I am not looking for a 100 proof to get buzzed quicker with minty fresh breath (bleh), or something to chug on a challenge (the aforementioned "151" proof also being a brand/product), but seeing an 83 proof, or 74 proof on some of these guys would lead me to believe that they are focusing more on the actual taste of the product and not an equation of how many people you can get drunk on it.

Update on my Macallen purchase... it's good, but not as great as I was expecting. Better than JW Black? Yes, but not worth the price premium if you ask me. I'll stick to JW Black.

I have many different whiskeys that are between 70 and 90 proof. Small distilleries are always trying new things to get the best taste. It's just that there is a 'standard' for what proof we should use.
