well, with my 400 feet left from the 1000 foot spool bought for wiring the house (my dad did all that), i decided to try my own hand at making ethernet cables. i'm pretty happy with the results 🙂 it worked, first try, both cables that i did.


and the dlink switch i bought is working well, too 🙂


all this to hook my xbox up to the internet 😛



anyway, i know it's not a huge accomplishment, or any real accomplishment at all. but i'm happy i was able to do it 🙂. and with me being an idiot, it's all the more cool 😛

How much did it cost for the supplies? I'm thinking about doing it for myself as well.

Probably only gonna need around 500 ft though.

i bought a big spool of the good belden stuff a long time ago... it's 100baseTX, so not as good as newer stuff. it's normal cat 5. but i like it enough 🙂 it blazes lan games 😛 and is fast enough to handle internet...
 
I notice deals for Cat5 on computergeeks.com now and again. Spool of wire and a tester, maybe also a crimper too. Making your own cables is great. Saves $$ and you can make them to the desired length.

Congrats on making your first cables, it took me years to remember the pairings for crimping, cuz I did it so rarely until I got my new job.
