Is it maintenance free or is there a lot of it? Is it like a bicycle where you just ride it?

Not maintenance free, but not too much maintenance, assuming that you get a decent-quality scooter (not a $300 Made-In-China special). You'll change the engine and transmission oils more regularly (mile-wise) than you would on a car, but the actual amounts needed are tiny and it's really easy to do. You'll want to check tire pressure often. Scooters and motorcycles are usually harder on batteries than cars, so you may need a new battery every 5 years or so. Things like brake pads, spark plug, transmission belt and air filter will need replacing eventually, but not every year or anything.

Mostly you just gas+go.

Ruckus if you want to be a hipster. Do you want a 50cc screamer or a 250 that can be decent on the hwy?

Tomos's are crazy fun too if you are a little mechanically inclined

I don't think I need something that will go on highway. Something around town.

Honda ruckus or metro.

Yamaha Zuma

These are both commonly used scooters and you should have no problem finding help or parts if u live in a metro area. I assume you are because that's where the scooter is at its best.
