As far as the automatic boxes, I prefer the ScoopFree box to the Littermaid one. We had one and it worked great, but our cat is far too big for it so I went back to a regular box.
We have 2 big cats, have 2 boxes, and scoop every 3-4 days. We also had the littermaid auto box at one point, but the gears grinded down within a year of having it, and it was too expensive to replace. For some reason our cats take larger craps than the thing was designed for :-(
Using the littermaid auto box required fresh step clumping litter to work correctly, and since then we have had great luck with it, other brands made the box stink sooner.
Jack Byrnes: FOCKER, I'm not gonna tell you again. Jinx cannot flush the toilet. He's a cat for Christ sakes!
Larry: The animal doesn't even have thumbs, Focker. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212338/quotes
I flush everyday after work and sometimes in the morning. If you leave it sit for more than 32 hours it reeks something awful.
I have two largish, low maintenance in every way boys (brothers) here. I have two boxes, and scoop 'em out every day. I use self-clumping litter and seldom change it out entirely, maybe three-four times a year.
The Costco deal on self-clumping litter is a good one, but is marginally beat by buying $3.49, 14lb containers of same @ Aldi. I stock up big time when I go.
Yeah, I'm cheap. And the litter boxes are in a remote bathroom on a level of its own that I never personally use. And I don't have a particularly acute sense of smell.
