I think the tC is still a little bit exaggerated in its looks. I'll concede its not cartoonish, especially not in the face of Scion's lineup. I like the tC and would consider owning one, but the fact that Scion tries to market a certain image does turn me off a bit. Then again, maybe that's just because I don't fall into their target market, but rather into the Toyota segment (which I drive).

I can believe it. Sometimes a smaller, more maneuverable car makes sense. But keep in mind, cars are not a luxury in the South as we lack any reliable public transport. Sure, Iowa has room for everyone to drive an Excursion, but why would you want to pay for one?
I think the bias against diesels has passed. The problem is that we still have no real diesel offerings. Every few years we get an announcement of something like a diesel option in an F150, an application that would've been acceptible at the height of the anti-diesel sentiment, it gets cancelled. I for one would love to have a diesel-powered car, just not from VW. 😛

I like the fact that the scion brand has its own "uniqueness" its very to cool to be able to mod your str8 from the factory and if you read the book, they really have some very interesting mods, all that which don't void the warranty..
personally i got mine bc of the price. it was a steal. i mean a 2 year old scion with 40k on the clock for ~8g's? you cant beat that.
i love my tc, i wanted a coupe as long as a reliable brand.. its not the fastest thing but its got a little pep and its my first vehicle aswell as first 5 speed.
if your into the customization of vehicles and "dare to be different" then the scion is for you.
if you want to be just another plain jane then go for the toyota.

The thing about modifying a car, especially so for appearance, is that the urge to do so wears with age -- and along with it, the taste for what you've done. Performance modifications are a whole different animal, those never get old. However, I know first-hand that the appearance mods of the past are not what I want now, largely because I still own my first car (bought 10 yrs ago when I was 17). I lowered it, did all sorts of stupid shit. I ended up doubling down the money on those to undo it all a few years ago. Now the "appearance mods" that I want are more along the lines of new leather for the seats.
Of course, not everyone keeps a car that long, in which case have fun. It's your car, your money, and your taste.
Besides, for better or for worse, if you keep a nearly 20 year old car that didn't have big production numbers (comparatively) in good mechanical and exterior condition, it dodges the "plain jane" badge on its own, eventually. That is one sweet run-on sentence, too.

I'm surprised this is the first you guys have seen of this car, considering it has been on sale overseas for quite some time and has even been reviewed by major magazines. The only new news is that Toyota has decided to bring the car to the states under the Scion brand rather than the Toyota brand under which it is sold elsewhere.
As for some of the questions in this thread, it is roughly the size of a Smart car and it seats "4" using some VERY clever packaging, including non-symmetrical seating arrangements and a flat fuel tank. 3 adults would be possible. Actually putting 4 adults in would be a challenge. Say what you want about it, but it's a superior car in nearly every way to the Smart car, and those have been selling very well already.

They are a dime a dozen in the Bay Area.
Of course, Tesla roadsters are a dime a dozen here, too, so this is clearly a land of early adopters. 😉
