They have threatened to sue slashdot for posting a small part of L Ron Hubbard's "Operating Thetan Levels". They have sue antioffline.com (which is unfortunately offline :/), but the wonderful guys there got the quotes hosted on a foreign webserver (not under copyright/DMCA laws). They are well known for their use of lawyers to restrict free speech.

xenu.net has a lot of information about them. Id post some of it here, but knowing how it has a tendancy to get people in trouble (and my respect for Anand and friends that run anandtech) I will not post it, nor link to it directly 🙂

Close. Scientology is based on fictional boox written by L. Ron Hubbard (I believe "Dianetics"<sp?> is the "big" one). It started out as anyother cult, but it managed to really take off in Hollywood and spread (It's currently being sued by the French government). In the early 80s (I believe) the Feds were looking into COS. But the COS, somehow convinced some d@mn court that they were a real religion. So now, they are basically bullet proof because they can justify just about everything as part of their "religion."

In the US (and maybe a few other countries) the COS is considered a religion. Thus it is afforded the Freedom Of Religion rights and what not.

But the majority of the countries out there (France and Germany come to mind) consider it a business. Thus they are afforded the rights of a business but not a religion.

I dont believe the rights of either type of institution include the right to restrict free speech, which by limiting the information available about it, it is doing. Its jus sick they can get away with all of this crap because they have money.
