Scientists Not So Sure 'Doomsday Machine' Won't Destroy World

OutHouse

i dont care how "safe" they think it is, the fact is they are playing with forces they will have no control over. they should leave it alone and blow up the machine.

Still worried that the Large Hadron Collider will create a black hole that will destroy the Earth when it's finally switched on this summer?

Um, well, you may have a point.

Three physicists have reexamined the math surrounding the creation of microscopic black holes in the Switzerland-based LHC, the world's largest particle collider, and determined that they won't simply evaporate in a millisecond as had previously been predicted.

Rather, Roberto Casadio of the University of Bologna in Italy and Sergio Fabi and Benjamin Harms of the University of Alabama say mini black holes could exist for much longer ? perhaps even more than a second, a relative eternity in particle colliders, where most objects decay much faster...

The same stupid kinds of ideas were around when the first atomic bomb was exploded and we see now how totally safe those are.

Relax, the worst that can happen is they will figure out how everything works and no longer need to believe in a God.

And anything that takes you before you can have a single thought can't be all bad.

I thought the fear was the atomic bombs could *destroy* (as in blow up) the world, or ignite the atmosphere..

both of which have been dis proven.

Versus how many other physicists who have said it is safe?

You assume that doom and gloom gets the same hearing as things are safe. That's not how the human psyche works. We survive by seeing the tiger in the weeds not the bouquet in the parlor.

FoxNews.com can think of a few other things that didn't seem possible once ? the theory of continental drift, the fact that rocks fall from the sky, the notion that the Earth revolves around the sun, the idea that scientists could be horribly wrong.

We're also wondering how often the LHC might create individual black holes, since longer-lived ones have a greater chance of merging with each other, and, um, well, see ya.

If the worst comes to pass, and there's now a slightly greater chance that it might, at least it might explain why we've never heard from extraterrestrial civilizations: Maybe they built Large Hadron Colliders of their own.

Wow fox news showing a true face here; they might as well mention the bible, jesus and how we shouldn't question the almighty God with our puny "science."

Exactly. But that turned out to be a total non-issue as all they do is kill millions of people.

That whole "article" read like a copy of a tabloid. The very fact it was headlined with "doomsday machine" and other articles were also headlined like that, only shows they are not reporting, but are pushing an agenda. Considering it's Faux News, it is no surprise.

We'll, we still have a few more years before they turn the tests results into weapons. I'm sure you and I will be dead from one of the other million things we need to be scared of way before than.

Wow fox news showing a true face here, nothing like journalists commenting on advanced phyisics...

You know that it's fear and terror that attract eyes and eyes is what determines your ad revenue stream. Never mind we create a nation of hypochondria psychotics, so long as the bottom line looks good. Fuck the people, give me my money. Sheep are destined for the table.

I'm working on a patent right now for the first black hole gun.

If anything, we'll all be sucked into the black hole and time will stop for everyone on the planet, and then we'll have plenty of time to figure out how to fix whatever we broke.

Quoting from the the three physicists' conclusions:

"We conclude that ... the growth of black holes to catastrophic size does not seem possible. Nonetheless, it remains true that the expected decay times are much longer (and possibly >> 1 second) than is typically predicted by other models," the three state in a brief paper posted at the scientific discussion Web site ArXiv.org.

Maybe Faux wants to be known as the "Chicken Little" network.

Wake up and think for yourself, don't believe in God, do whatever you want, but at least think before writing down such a perfect contradiction.

In any case, when did creating BLACK HOLES become ok? I think it's safe to say this is a bit different then the idea of a nuke maybe igniting the atmosphere. I think we can all agree that black holes destroy everything, the beauty of this is that they will be created here, and no one knows the outcome after that. This is stated in the LHC's own press releases.

Stephen Hawking has never had one of his theory's proven correctly and until we create a black hole like he wants, he'll never have the chance to prove them. He's had a hard life and maybe he might just have a death wish because of these things.

In all, finding higs particles and proving some mans obsession is not worth the risk of 6 billion lives.

I just want to know if Gordon Freeman is going to be putting the isotopes into this machine. If so, I am building a home made spaceship.

I can't help but wonder why this dang thing has created so much controversy. I'm inclined to believe that there are scientific advances to be had from this machine that rich and powerful people aren't ready for us to have.

Note: Need more tin foil.

Where's the contradiction? I live in a world with millions of nuclear weapons targeted at my head but I'm going to get all wound up about black holes? I don't think it's me not doing the thinking. You retards are walking around in your sleep, a well placed insult away from mutually assured destruction, and I'm not thinking?

I was single-handedly able to prove that a Neanderthal can use a computer.

Last summer when this thing was about to fire up one or a couple of the scientists mentioned there is a theoretical possibility it could destroy the Earth. Any newspaper capable of selling advertisement print will jump on that story 🙂

Classic moonbean, no argument so make fun of the poster.

This thread is epic in its level of fail. Scientists are like every other group of people. There are a few nutjob, paranoia mongering idiots. Fortunately science is effective at policing itself, or we'd need to be scared of the homeopathic remedies produced by UFOs that were sent from Zeus who lives in Atlantis.
