Scientists make first nerve stem cells

Analog

Lifer
The world's first pure batch of nerve stem cells made from human stem cells has been created at Edinburgh University, scientists have reported.

It is hoped the newly-created cells will eventually help scientists find new treatments for diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

BBC science correspondent Pallab Ghosh said the cells should help researchers test the effectiveness of new drugs.

Stem cells are "master" cells that can become many kinds of tissue.

Nerve stem cells are those which help build the brain and central nervous system.

Too bad there are morons opposed to the use of a fetus to continue this research.

If it was up to me I'd allow people to exchange their newborns for money so they can have their stem cells harvested. Or farm women for stem cells. I'd be a goddamned millionaire within 9 months.

I'm not sure I would go quite that far (the supply would quickly surpass the demand) but when fetuses are disposed of, there should definately be an option to have whatever there is given to science (including stem cells)

Indeed, I know several at my college and church that thinks this is bad. Hopefully this is the first step towards a cure for Parkinson?s disease. It runs in my family and I would love to have those afflicted by it cured.

And whatever not all of us Christians oppose this. As a matter of fact, most I know dont.

Very good news

Even if we outlaw stem cell harvesting altogether it doesnt matter. Other countries will continue research and profit tremendously from it.

that's kind of the problem 😛

while all the tools in the presidency and churches debate this here, the rest of the world will pass us in bio/pharm research...

Obviously you have very little respect for life and know very little about methods of obtaining stem cells.

You can get a very large supply from the umbilical cord and you don't have to take a life to get them.

But then, where is the fun?

That's where this gets a little hazy.
