Scientists Discover Secret to Hangover-Free Drinking
Thursday, March 04, 2010

The dreaded morning-after feeling could be a thing of the past after scientists in South Korea came up with a technique that allows drinkers to avoid a hangover, Sky News reported Thursday.

A team of researchers added extra oxygen to drinks and found that the body was then able to metabolize the booze quicker and eliminate the alcohol quicker — cutting down the after affects.

Healthy humans were given 8 ounce and 12 ounce drinks containing 19.5 percent alcohol by volume — all with different amounts of oxygen added.

The results, documented in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, showed those who consumed the more highly oxygenated drinks recovered more quickly and saw their blood alcohol levels return to normal more speedily.

"Elevated dissolved oxygen concentrations in alcoholic drinks accelerate the metabolism and elimination of alcohol," according to researchers In-hwan Baek, Byung-yo Lee and Kwang-il Kwon of Chungnam National University's College of Pharmacy.

"Thus, enhanced dissolved oxygen concentrations in alcohol may have a role to play in reducing alcohol-related side effects and accidents."

The only downside the researchers found was that the process also reduced the amount of time drinkers were actually drunk for.

A Korean drinks company is now launching an oxygenated 'soju' drink called O2 Lin - a drink the company says "helps clarify your brain, energizes your body cells, and maintains healthy and resilient skin."

What? Defeats the purpose of drinking.

I thought the Oxygen part was known already? Anybody who has been drunk at high altitudes and then at sea level (or vice versa) would probably notice that it takes more to get drunk at sea level. It's a small change in O2, yet a number of people who I've traveled with noticed a difference.

i remember reading somewhere about fighter pilots that would huff pure oxegen after a night of hard drinking to sober up before flying.

Wait... there's a problem with decreasing how long someone is drunk for?

I guess it all depends on the day. All day mild drinking while outside and just having a good time? Awesome, want it to last.

Drinking heavily at a bar or house party late at night? I don't plan on being there till 4-6am (i've done that, often), so I don't want it to last till then either. Right up until sleep time is perfect imho.

Just drink a shitload of water before you pass out ... you'll have to wake up to piss, but it's better than waking up hung over.

It's definitely a great idea to perhaps drink well oxygenated water shortly before bed.

Interesting. So basically we need to genetically engineer yeast that produce oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. 😉

Dude leave it to koreans to find out more then one way to get drunk and sober..

*sigh*

we already knew the secret, its called drinking water before you pass out

all through college and to this day i force myself to drink about a liter of water before i go to sleep after a night/day of drinking

no hangovers

As great as this sounds, it will end up being quite disastrous. that hangover is a natural deterrent from too much drinking. yeah...it doesn't really work 🙂D), but this could inspire heavier, more frequent drinking among those needing little incentive.

like me.
