It doesn't say they glow in the dark directly, but only when UV light is shining on them.... So what? they need a blacklight shining on them to be glow in the dark? What a ripoff!

Because it means we can successfully incorporate genes from other species into complex animals and have them be viable. The applications are endless. The article states that it will probably be used to study human diseases. Instead of experimenting on people they can put those human genes into an animal and study them.

The reason they made the dog glow is just learn the process and make it easy to determine whether their experiment worked.
