Science Channel replacing Syfy?

techs

Lifer
The Science Channel already airs Firefly and they just started airing Fringe. Now they have promos for upcoming Dollhouse and Terra Nova.

It looks like Science sees the lack of science fiction as an opportunity to move in.

Here's to hoping they provide competition to Syfy. Maybe force Syfy to move back to science fiction or to just give it up and let Science take over the genre.

I wouldn't mind at all if the Science channel took over the role completely since they've actually picked up some decent scifi as opposed to the crap that Syfy runs nowadays.

History Channel isn't about History
You ain't learning on The Learning Channel.
There's nothing true on Tru TV
And Fox News is Fair and Balanced.

The growing appetite for bullshit and reality shows makes me not want to live on this planet anymore.

Add A&E, Art and Entertainment channel. It should be called the Duck Dynasty Channel.

I keep discussing this with my girlfriend, actually. I think SyFy has suffered the ills of basic cable, appealing to the VERY lowest common denominator. Meanwhile, Science is picking up all kinds of great stuff and becoming phenomenal. It's already pretty much the only channel I watch, but it's just getting better.

What I have to wonder is how Discovery Networks is afford those shows. Or are the owners selling the syndication rights for cheap?

I think its more a question of where else those shows can go. Also, Science may be overpaying for the shows based on their lower viewership but they are doing it to build an audience. Like when Scifi did the miniseries Taken they lost a lot of money on it but they gained a lot of viewers.

I don't think airing reruns, many you listed have been over for a few years, will mean anything especially when the channel is on higher cost packages generally.

If they get new material it's one thing but reruns that people can easily find online means little.

Scifi first started with reruns to build a scifi audience before they started making their own shows. Perhaps that is the plan at Science?

My concern would be a even smaller audience available to them unless they are somehow able to move to a more common / cheaper package on cable / satellite.

You mean Moonshinin' and Ancient Aliens isnt history ??????????

Really though that channel was good 10 years ago, even though it was known as the "hitler" channel since WW2 was its main focus. It was still doing what it should do...Which is history.

Everything on discovery has to be a contest, they are mining more gold catching more fish finding more crap, most of it is utter rubbish imo. And now we have 3 war channels lol

I use to enjoy I think it was called the the Airplane channel but it was taken over by the military channel.

There also use to be the Research Channel which was great for pure science but it closed two years ago 🙁

The Smithsonian channel has some good shows on it.

What? Even more ghosts???

let me check when I get back to work tomorrow.

Maybe it wasn't "announced" just yet.

I'd be interested in knowing. I just checked their website and didn't see anything.
Then again, their website has a lot of space devoted to stuff that isn't on their channel and very little about their own shows. At least right now.

Edit: FYI Syfy is having a 20th anniversay of the network show on Dec. 10th

I'm going off memory and I read a lot about what networks are doing, so please don't read too much into it. I could be thinking of Boomerang or RFDTV or any other random network.

Ya that network went DOWNHILL when it became "Syfy",i hope "Science channel" will bring it back to where it was!

Apologies for necroing an old thread...

So now the Science channel is pure crap?

go figure.

 You betcha it is!!!

Every time I surf my channel listing or flip to that channel all I ever catch them showing is "How It's Made".

I drop them an email 2-3 times a month about it. Hell they might as well rename the channel to The Industrial Manufacturing Channel or fire the idiot that's in charge of the program scheduling line-up.

Is Terra Nova coming back? 😱

*Edit*
Dang it, fell into necro trap again...
