I'm reading the books right now, and that is why I changed my opinion.

I'd say farscape. They are all out on DVD worldwide. I think only season 4 isn't out in the US, but will be soon?

It seems to take place too often in everyday earth. Seems to revolve too little around technology and alien worlds. Know what I mean?
It's a budget thing -- out of every 22-3 episodes they set a couple on Earth or in 1-2 sets and they usually have 1 "clip show" every other season. The rest of the time there is a slowly developing but sweeping story involving several alien races in conflict and the discovery of ailen technology, plus some pretty good one-off episodes outside of the main arc. Unlike B5 it's mostly planet-bound (since the gates are on planets) but usually the other planets aren't a shopping mall (they're a patch of forest ;) )

I love Stargate also, it's probably my favorite sci-fi series to date. My wife even likes it, she gets pissed when we miss it on Saturdays. Excellent writing, characters and plotline. Every now and then there is a "slow" episode but I would say the entire series is worth watching. You could probably split it 70/30 as far as how many episodes center around fighting aliens and how many deal with moral/ethical/human interest dilemas. I really like how they tie earth mythology and ancient history into the story of the universe.

If you have cable tv, just watch TNG on TNN, you don't really need to watch it in sequence, though they are showing it that way now. DS9, however, requires you to watch the series from season 1 to the end in sequence, as the storyline and character development all build upon itself.

Stargate is fantastic! One of the very best shows on TV. Crisp writing coupled with excellent fx and character rich plot-lines.
