Walked into Fry's last night to check out their TV selection. I was going to buy myself a flat panel to put above the fireplace for Christmas. So as I'm walking around in their TV department, I see a red label for a Viewsonic VPW425 42" Plasma HDTV for $1999. but I didn't see the TV anywhere and figured it was out of stock being that it was discontinue. But I asked one of the sales guys and he said yeah, it's over on 56B. Lo and Behold, there she is. Not a scratch on her. Connected a video cable and fired her up, and it's a very solid picture. Not as good as the high end plasmas, but for my use and the price, I couldn't be happier. I was expecting to drop nearly 3 grand on an lcd or plasma. Woot! Since it was open box, I ask for a discount and get it for 1799. Mounting it as we speak.

For some reason the second picture is showing up weird in my browser, even though it looks fine on my computer.

You need to put those wires through the wall, it would make the setup look 10x sleeker.

1) Its amazing that you were able to post AND mount your new TV at the exact same time, per your OP.

2) WTF would you even post here before watching atleast one movie!

3) Wow, judging by that second picture...it looks like it was too close to the fireplace.

4) nice TV :)

Congrats on the deal...as much as I don't like that panel, that's a killer price.

That's an EDTV plasma, right? What are the specs (brightness, contrast ratio, etc.).

The reason I ask is that Fry's usually has a Daewoo plasma on sale every other week for $1699 new, and people over on AVSForum have confirmed it's has complete NEC internals. In the EDTV plasma market, NEC is considered second only to Panasonic. That being considered, the budget Daewoo panels are a great bargain.

Nice, but I wouldn't drop down that much on a new TV. I'd go for a killer computer or at least some sweet upgrades.

It's EDTV with 853x480 pixels but Viewsonic markets it as an HDTV. It downscales HDTV signals. But it has a better picture than the generic brand screens I have been seeing that go for about $150 more.

Kelvrick,

I know one of the chemical engineers that works at TI fabbing those TI DLP chips. He offered to get me a discount on one of the Samsung's :D , which will go in my media room.

i agree with the comment about the setup, the tv looks off centered, and it looks too small to be above the mantel

congrats though

I hate how misleading companies can be, you really got a EDTV. But not a bad price for one.

It is off-centered a bit and will be straightened out. We couldn't tell at first because there were only 2 of us, and we were mounting it hehe. Thankfully the bracket makes it easy to slide around.

I obviously am not going to leave it as is. The wires will be hidden later.

Same 1-year warranty. I should know by then it anything is wrong. I went over the unit with a fine-tooth comb. There are no noticeable scratches, no broken connections, and everything works right down to every button on the remote control.

I could have bought an extended warranty, but for $499 it is not worth it considering it's about 30% of the price.
