Schwarzenegger tells motorcyclists to pipe down, signs noise bill

So, does removing the baffles in the exhaust do anything useful besides make it louder?

Depends on the engine, intake, and exhaust. With an air cooled Harley, if you use an open pipe and add a K&N you can pick up a couple horsepower at WOT.

I don't see the big issue here. All the bill does is allow CA police to enforce the Federal laws that already exist. It's already a Federal law that you cannot remove emissions control devices; I've yet to see anyone mention something in the CA bill (now law) that differs in any meaningful way from the Federal laws.

whoa...wait....motorcycles have emission controls?
/I really don't know

I thought, because of posts on this forum, that bikes had no catalytic convertors... My brother who's an enduro rider and a Land Rover tech told me the other day that most new bikes do have cats!

I've got no problem with this, there are a bunch of guys that live in a condo across the street that feel the need to gun their engines as they pull drive through our development. There's nothing like having your windows rattled by a moron that's accelerates as hard as he can over and over again between each speed bump. It's obnoxious.

Motorcycles have only recently (in the 2000s) started using catalytic converters, but yes, the majority of new bikes do have them.

It's worth noting that the government regulations merely specify the emissions results, not specific equipment. If a company can meet the requirements without a catalytic converter, they don't need to have one. Kind of like the old CVCC Hondas; Honda met the emissions requirements without catalytic converters and therefore were the last passenger automotive holdout before the regulations tightened and cats became universal.

My 2009 Triumph has 3 cats in the stock exhaust. One in the mid-pipe, and one in each muffler.

The one and only bill in CA I have wanted passed and signed into law.
Screw those guys that have to burn those pipes just to piss people off.

Aw, jeez, not this shit again.

Here you go, maybe this will help.

I really have no problems with this, honestly. I would usually crusade personal freedoms, but .. as was said, cars and trucks can't do this and get away with it. It's strange that it isn't enforced with motorcycles. It should be.

seriously, usually i am for less restrictions, but rice rockets got harrased by cops for this for years...no one stood up for rice rocket "personal rights"

now..bikers getting harassed and crying about it..yeah.. ok..the irony is they should have defended rice rockets instead of ripping on them the past decade or whatever..but like someone already said, no one cares as long as they "get theirs"

I hope they mandate mufflers on all bikes in all states. I like loud cars and bikes as much as anyone, but the bikes, particularly Harleys, are freaking ridiculous.

The argument is bogus, anyway. Plus, all bikers are lying about why they have the damn pipes, anyway...they just want them because they sound cool. All that "loud pipes save lives" B.S. is just so they can still sound cool.

Think about this: If a bike is riding at the back corner of my truck and I don't see him....and he's not accelerating....it's not that loud, and since his exhaust is facing backwards, I'm not going to hear him. So the pipes aren't going to save his ass if I don't see him and cut him off.

I'm for this, but only in cases where the bikes are literally painfully loud for people that are unfortunate enough to be passed by them. Fuck those fags. 🙂

This is pretty funny. I'm sure every snowmobiler in the country said a collective 'yes' when this law was passed.

I was in high school but I always knew it was time to go when my cousin (who lived 2 houses down) started his sled. I had an '00 year sled which was the first year the gov't started cracking down on snowmobiles - I always surprised him when I showed up 'early'. Everyone knew sleds were just the easiest target.

Woo Wooooo

There are already laws to handle excessive noise. This is just a way to generate additional revenue by enforcing the EPA's stamp program.

im ok with this law, its already in place here in az anyway...

i have a 4-1 kirker pipe on my 79 honda cb750. its a bit beat up, and one night on the way to a friends house the whole back section dropped off on the freeway. i ended up going back and picking it up, but the mounting tabs were screwed and i hadnt had time to fix it. i got stopped and had to show the judge i had it fixed, as there are already laws in place that mandate you have to have suppression on a motorcycles exhaust system. this was 16 or 17 years ago. even with the pipes all put together my bike will set off alarms while idling by, its just a naturally loud engine.

my truck is loud as well, so i do make sure to chug along in a higher gear at night as well as not engine brake. that is stock exhaust as far as i can tell, no aftermarket on my truck yet.

I'm surprised this wasn't already a law. Edmonton has had noise pollution laws for as long as I can remember. Driving around in a diesel truck with straight pipes = tickets up the ass. If the law were written by me, you'd also get a fist up your ass for breaking the noise laws.

This is like the fags who run HIDs without projector assemblies. Blinds everyone on the damn road, but the cops aren't going to do shit about it.
I had a friend help me solve this problem. Find some flat ground and have your friend park behind you at what you think is a normal following distance. Turn on the high beams in your friend's car. Adjust your center rear view mirror until the high beams reflect into your friend's eyes. Stop slouching and rest your head against the seat. Take note of what the mirror is looking at from your perspective.

For me in my car, having the center mirror look at the rear right "oh shit" handle means the headlights of the person behind me will shine back in their eyes 😀

I can tell it's working because they start driving crazy. Often they'll tailgate, back way off, or just change lanes.

Even a switchable exhaust setup would be preferable, something the rider could switch over to when he thinks it's appropriate, but not in the city where he can cause actual physical pain to bystanders.

It's nice and peaceful and quiet out here in the country. Please keep your "look at me, I've got a loud bike" idiots confined to your cities. Thank you.
