Schools trying to ban candy

Personally, I think schools should ban candy. The youth, nowadays, have very little self-control. This is one of the reasons why Americans are getting fatter every year. Sure, there are some people out there who are genetically "bigger boned", but that hardly accounts for the reason why more then half of Americans are overweight. Admit it, people. Many are not capable of self control to the point where they can learn to live healthy. Food is not like cigarettes where they are physically addicting. Sure, its awesome how we Americans can get lots of food for extremely cheap, but unless people start caring to give excercise a try, it only causes harm to those who constantly pig out. I'm only 20, but I'm in shape because I enjoy playing sports and I care about not getting fat. People often say, "I don't care about what people think of me". Well, how about caring about what you want? If you want to lose weight, do something about it. I also remember how my high school banned soda back in the days, only to be replaced by juice with just as much sugar. Sure, they have vitamins and etc, but that'll hardly help.

Nay. Not allowing them to make decisions for themselves isn't going to improve self control.

Hell no!

Parents just need to stop giving kids handfuls of cash. If I bought candy at school, it was my money that I earned by working.

Ban soda first. Public schools don't do enough to emphasize the importance of eating right. Hell I had to learn that for myself. Go to other countries, no one eats like Americans. Kids should not become obese, but so many of them are, mostly because they don't know better. Self control is something that has to be taught, especially to children.

Yes, kids don't know better, they need to be told. By the time the reach late teens early 20's and are fat it will be too late already.

It's not the money, it's the fact that like 50% of the school is becoming obese. But yeah, I kind of agree with So, nobody is forcing the kids to shove the candy down their throats. They gotta know how to make more intelligent decisions.

You're right. It's not, but it will improve the healthiness of younger people. I'm not sure if you've been to a K-12 school anytime recently, but theres hardly anything nutrious or healthy as an option to buy. Removing candy means it will only be replaced by something else. Decisions are still to be made. Dont forget. They're all kids. They dont care about the longterm affects and they often cant decide for themselves.

Simple sugars aren't good for thinking.

Too much also aids in tooth decay and diabetes.

Also large amounts at once causes hyperactivity.

Yea they have a pretty good case to ban it, and I'm surprised its taken them this long. :p

That's assanine thinking, especially when it involves school. Maybe all math courses should be voluntary?

Isn't it funny, if a kid does something stupid like shoplifting and assault, people whine "where are the parents?" yet if a kid can't stop shoving candy and soda down his throat he just needs to learn some self control. The bottom line is that kids are kids and the adults of this world need to step up and take some responsibility for whats happening to our youth. Absolutely ban soda and candy at schools.

It is the money, though. If the kids have to work to earn the money they might think twice about dumping it all on candy.

the responsible ones can wait until 3 o clock to get home to grab a coke and a snickers bar. the fatties gotta be taught. school is for teaching right? change up the lunch menu too, pizza, burgers and fries? chicken nuggets? I never eat that crap anymore. My meals are certainly blander now that I know better, but atleast I won't be fat. That is a far worse fate.

... when i was a kid i saved up my quarters for candy... the only other thing i can remember actually saving my money for was maybe a few rounds of ninja turtles in time on an arcade machine. otherwise i was happy riding my bike in circles for hours outside every day.

I would typically say no, but it has come to this that kids nowadays have a lot of poor self control due to lack of proper parenting intervention. I sometimes hate it how they always seem to attack the problem at the child level, when the adults at home are really the issue.

I'd rather be fat than live my life sucking tofu soymilk-shakes through a straw. :disgust:

Heaven forbid we should indulge and enjoy some great food. :|

Don't ban candy, require more vigorous exercise and more intensive health and nutrition classes.

agreed. I actually love eating better foods. Hell, my fav food is sushi. I also love eating salads, and i dont drench them with dressing like most people do, which make them hardly healthy.

school is for teaching. its for preparing students to better their future and the decisions they make.

True - i learned that too. I stopped eating all candy and soda a year ago, and started bringing my own food to school for lunch too (as opposed to eating corndogs, pizza, fried nearly-tace stuff, etc; along with the side of fries that comes with EVERY MEAL the school serves). I think schools need to ban candy and soda, as well as change the lunch menus before my generation turns into a bunch of lazy fatasses

um, its up to the parents to train their kids to have self control.
i just graduated from my highschool, and at the beginning of my senior year, they took away pop sales during school hours and no candy sales either. it was even hard for clubs to have candy fundraising because they were afraid they will sell to kids during school.

i think its a crap rule, but i think it turned into an ohio law. not sure about that. but yea, if a kid has no self control, its because the parents suck at parenting and can't push self control into the kids mind. by putting a rule like that into effect, you are punishing everybody because a few fat kids suck at life. im sorry, i have no respect for those who are overweight, because its easily rectified. letting oneself get to that point is evidence they don't have the ability to control themselves, and thus fail at life. then they say its too hard to do anything when they are so big. should have seen the problem coming when they were gaining weight at an exponential rate.
bleh, either way, its a parenting issue and schools want to help rectify it. what they don't know is that kids will go right home and drink a can of pop, or bring their own pop into school (not against the rule, just the school can't sell it)... i always grabbed some pop when I got home.
now the pop argument goes the same for candy. its okay if the kid can practice self control. but the school shouldn't be trying to cater to these individuals, because once they get out of school, the problem will still continue. only punishing those who do have self control.

That works, but even with mandatory PE classes, anyone who doesnt care about improving his/her physique doesnt really benefit much. Kids are soo lazy nowadays. If you dont believe me, go to a high school and watch a PE class. They dont get anything more then the most basic excercise, such as walking and lifting up their arms once in a while.
