Schools supporting DC?

Hey everybody. I was looking at this site one day, when we were on the verge of loosing a spot, wondering how we could get more packets/finds/molecules and I realized that schools have a LOT of underused computers. Think about all those computers, that must be updated every other year, so that we can surf on the internet and make a little report every so often. What if we took advantage of all the wasted CPU hours? I brought it up jokingly to my librarian/computer lab head and she kind of laughed. But I think I'll give it a real try tommorow. The only possible problem might be county regulations dealing with installing stuff on the computers. I suggest that all those students out there should give it a try, think of all the possibilites (evil *Dr Evil* laugh)
 
Some do support DC projects, and some don't.

Just make sure you get permission, and make sure it is in writing. Verbal OK isn't good enough when it comes to government agencies. Just check out http://www.freemcowen.com to get an idea of how wrong it can get.

It never hurts to ask, so hey, if you do get permission, that's great! 😀
 
Written permission is a must. Even then, you're probably not entirely safe if some crazy government official gets an :evil: idea in his head... Just ask Dave McOwen. 🙁

Still, I think it would be nice if schools would put more support into DC projects. Maybe each class could run a project on their computers that relates to what they're studying - astronomy (SETI), biology (Folding@Home), chemistry (uh, DPAD? I dunno), etc.

Sorry to sound so negative, but I'd rather not see anyone else have to go through all the hell that Dave went through.
 
wow all that over searching for aliens/discovering new medicines. thanks for the advice, i'll be sure to get written approval now.

Good luck Mtn. This is Dave. While many Countries especially over in Europe have embraced the Technology and as a German reporter told me "That we have all of our Schools and Institutions running Distributed Computing Projects", sadly that is not the case in the U.S. especially the State of Georgia. There may be other States that are anti-Technology but just haven't stated so in public like Georgia has so beware.

Just be careful about who you talk to about computers. Our librarian at high school yelled at someone about the computer - he was moving the mouse back and forth a bit while a webpage loaded. "Don't do that, that breaks the computer!"
I also went ahead and defragmented a computer - the computer programming teacher just about flipped out when she saw the disk defrag map. Never seen anything like it before apparently.

So if you do ask anyone about it, good luck, and hope that you get someone who knows at least a little bit about computers. If you get hilarious remarks, be sure to post them here too. 😀

Georgia - mention of that state brought to mind what I read in Newsweek a few hours ago. They want to change their textbooks, so that the word "evolution" is replaced with "biological changes over time."

I'm going to go ahead and call the Georgia gov't a bunch of backwards arse rednecks with their head in the sand - and I live in Florida! 😛

They stripped more than just Evolution out of the Science classes. Apparently according to them earthquakes don't happen, there is no Tectonic plates and the Continents are not moving, that the planet was just made this way in an instant. There's a bunch more but I knew the California folks on here would get a jolt out of that one. There is a large thread on this over in P&N.

Even most creationists recognize that there are tectonic plates and that they are (and have been) moving! WTF are those freaky Georgians (excluding you and our other GA-based TeAmmates) thinking? :Q
 
I asked the chief sys admin at my university what he thinks about DC in general and if there was any possibility to run any of our DC projects on at least some of the university's machines ... guess what he told me :

"Well, yeah sure we could do that, but then we (he has 4 guys working with him) would loose some of our daily production for SETI and F@H!"

And I was like "WHAT THE HELL??"

And he just kept on laughing and told me that they had been running several DC projects for years now, but all divided into small groups and different accounts as they do it without the approval or even knowledge of the master chief of the university.

I think that's quite cool. At least it's for the sake of science. Though of course it would be so damn nice to have these 1100 PCs crunching for the TeAm ... maybe I can talk him into joining at least some SETI accounts into TeAm ... that would be the deatblow to BBR. From what I understood, he was talking about 300 thousand SETI WUs on about 30 different accounts and I was like :Q :Q :Q

Deathblow to BBR? How about deathblow to BBR and HP! That would be worth a couple of kegs worth of :beer:, and I'm sure the TeAm would pitch in for that.
 
I'm going to meet him on Sunday at the local pub. That should give some advance I guess 😀 ... LOTS of beer there ... I really hope I can talk him into registering some accounts of SETI to TeAm!!
 
After 1st Semester was over, I helped the teacher use Norton Ghost to setup all of the lab computers for the next semester......If I just could have gotten Seti installed as a service on the master computer!
