Should have been shut down.
All fine and good if they were in a WORLD HISTORY Class. The article say it was a World Geography Class.
Religion has nothing to do with Geography.
If it were a World History Class. I could see it.
The article says World Geography Class.

You don't need a great deal of religion to teach a world history class, either.
Everybody should think of learning about WW2 in history. Remember everything you were told about Jews during the time, and think of what you actually knew about their religion. When you were about to learn about WW2, you probably only knew the following things related to Jews:
1. Judaism is a religion that believes in "God" (and you might not even have learned that much)
2. Hanukah, candelabra, small hat thing, "Star of David" appearance
You probably didn't learn these things at the time you went over WW2 or go over the Judaic religion at all. Why? Because you know everything you need to know in order to understand the subject already. You simply do not need further information, like to read or write detailed religious statements or references.
Similarly, I highly doubt that the first time a kid hears "Islam" is during a World History class, or that it was the first time they were introduced to the idea of "people have different backgrounds and beliefs" -- the latter of which is generally all one needs for comprehension of anything (ie: group "a" didn't like group "b" because group "a" and group "b" have different beliefs/color/contested lands/etc.). The job of a public school is not to introduce a kid to religions of the world beyond the most rudimentary knowledge required for comprehension and, frankly, for all religions on all subjects relevant in a school environment, the amount of religious information required to teach something is extremely minimal.
I can think of no valid argument that could possibly support the assignment, for any religion, in any context.
