School Zone: 25MPH When children are present.

Near my parents there is a speed limit sign with the exact wording that's in the title of this thread. Oddly enough, it's in front of a community college. Everyone drives by at about 40-45 MPH all the time. There are never any children around.

The other school zone thread made me think of this...
 
Heh around the corner from me there is a high school and they have one of those radar things with the sign that displays how fast you are going when you drive by. Earlier this morning I saw an old guy in a Jaguar blow through there. Speed limit is 35, the sign read 64.

Haha, that's the problem with those things. Some people like to see how fast they can get it up too. In Toronto 10 years back on one of the highways there was a sharp turning ramp. So to prevent trucks from going too fast, they installed radar and a sign that flashed "Fast" if they were going over the limit. But the problem was alot of people in cars, plus trucks liked to make it light up. So even more trucks were flipping because of the sign.

Haha, that's the problem with those things. Some people like to see how fast they can get it up too. In Toronto 10 years back on one of the highways there was a sharp turning ramp. The only one I know of in Birmingham is prior to a corner called "Dead man's corner" aptly named, considering that people die (or at least frequently bail into the sidewall). Thing is, it's got this radar message, along with various signs warning you to slow the hell down, and yet tractor trailers continue to wipe out going around it and hold up traffic.

There's one on I80 west in the Tahoe region, left curve/turn is supposed to be 50, but people do 60+ on it.
 
There used to be a place in Asheville where the speed limit was 20, but the school zone sign said 25. they finally took the sign down after about 6 years...
 
One day my buddy and I were walking home drunk from the bar, we passed one of those radar carts. It was parked on a large grassy area off to the right of the sidewalk. We decided to see who could outrun the other one. He ran first, registering 6mph. As I was running by it, a car was coming and it picked up it's speed instead of mine. I "outsprinted" him to the tune of 35mph 😀

considering any non-oil-tanker-sized vehicle can automatically tack 15 MPH onto suggested turn speed signs, it sounds like people are slowing down for it. my car has pretty lame grip and i can take turns at 25 over the suggested speed pretty easy. 30 is asking for trouble though. 😉
 
Usually there's a 50% padding that can be added. But not always. I've had tons of 10-25MPH turns that are 10-25MPH turns. Often they'll repave a road and the speed will change. The offramp to get home went from being a 25-45 turn to a 25-35 turn when they repaved it, the fastest way around is to cut into the shoulder and get on the old pavement. The first week after paving it four cars went off the curve taking out reflectors and leaving skid marks.
 
25? wow, it's 20 down here in Texas.

And as we've seen with the behavior of some college ATOTers, that sign might be appropriate.
