But simply being someone who speaks Spanish means you're contributing to the decay of America? I just don't understand why you're so threatened by hearing another language being used by those around you. Why are you so damn scared of people different from you?

I'm American, I don't want a bilingual nation. You're now ignoring my earlier arguments that our ancestors came to this nation and learned English...

Again, following your contentions above, we should see ATM's in German, Italian, Japanese, Portugeuse, Chinese, Korean... Why limit it to just Spanish?

*edit* In response to thujone's argument above, English is not a race, it's a language.
opinions like yours where we the US must cater and bend to the will of a group of criminals is a crime alone.

was that in reference to a language? i think not.

whats wrong with spanish ads? Walmart over here runs the occasional Chiense Ad...does that mean china is taking over the USA? This stuff is aimed to grab the attention of first generation immigrants and hook them there...

i swear, fear mongering over the most retarded things

*edit* In response to thujone's argument above, English is not a race, it's a language. I'm arguing for the cultural preservation of our country. If you want to side with johnjohn320 and thrujone you'd best start learning to speak Spanish, since "TIMES CHANGE."
I feel like I'm a broken record. Why limit it to Spanish? Because there are a lot of Spanish-speaking people here, nitwit! It's not that complicated to understand.

And, once again, I have to reiterate that NO ONE IS TAKING YOUR ENGLISH AWAY. You can still speak it all you want. Spanish is just a language, nothing more. Relax already.

edited for a typo, don't want to have my argument derailed by such a keen observation again...

Now you resort to calling me a nitwit.

Well you don't read my previous posts!

*surprised*

My point is that your argument is flawed. Given your argument that "TIMES CHANGE.", so since the population of the United States is shifting to a more Spanish-speaking base, we should all learn Spanish.

We're just going in circles here, man. You're apparently not reading my posts here, because you're asking questions I already answered. I don't know how to debate with you when you simply ignore what I say and make the same point again.

JohnJohn, I think I was quite restrained in my argument. I'm not "...being a dick about it...," I'm stating my opinion. You choose to assume points I'm not making.

Before you start calling me and my arguments stupid, you might consider either learning how to spell (or how to use a spell checker):

Well, duh, how many Italians do you see her versus Mexicans? Use your head and stop making stupid points.

No John, my GRANDPARENTS came here in the 1900's (less than 100 years ago)... several hundred years after the 1600's when America was first "discovered" by the Europeans.

Ahh... JohnJohn from the unspoiled heartland of Indiana. I'm sure you have quite the cultural melting pot there. I actually speak Spanish, Italian, and a bit of French. How about you?

So you're ready to learn Spanish as your primary language? (Given that Spanish speaking populations are now predominant in California, Texas, and Arizona). Given the prior post above from Alkemyst in Miami, it seems the population there would prefer that Spanish be the official language in Florida!

Your generalizations with regard to Canada are specious. They have quite a civil dispute brewing between the pro-French Quebecois (though it's interesting that they are also staunchly Catholic) and the rest of the population.

*edit* I have no disagreement with the population of Mexican and other immigrants here trying to make a better life. I believe they do pay their fair share of taxes (sales and property taxes). I believe they work incredibly hard (as do most Americans) for the pittance they are paid.

I have an issue with cultural assimilation. If you're coming to the United States, learn English. For those Cubans and others in Florida proposing to make the official language of Florida SPANISH... I think that's a sick twisted joke. Go back home!
You're one to speak about making assumptions-I am currently attending college in Indiana. In the school I am in there, there are more Asians than Caucasians. I was born and raised in Texas, where yes, there was quite a bit of Spanish spoken, before moving to Chicago. I speak English, Spanish, and a little German.

Your point about your grandparents is laughable! Plymouth Rock is when we took over the nation? The Trail of Tears was in 1838-39, buddy. For that matter, you're ignoring my point, which is that the face of America changed then, as it is now.

So, if you're gonna talk about making assumptions, you should probably not dub me as some sheltered Midwesterner who doesn't have to worry about these issues anyway. My whole family speaks several languages, learning them was not the end of the world. You, however, get "so @#$(*& pissed off" when you hear a Spanish option on the telephone, as though you are so threatened by the presence of another language in YOUR God-given land.

One more point: Go to Europe, Japan, etc etc....how many signs will you see there in English? Quite a few. People who speak English? They're everywhere. So stop your bellyaching about us "catering" to another culture.

Your first rebuttal was pointing out a typo of mine? Please...

Why is it so fricken hard for people like you to open your eyes and see how our country is being taken over by illegal aliens and their culture and language is becoming main stream. doenst that bother you? dont you even care about the present and the future of our country?

Im not scared of spanish, im just pissed that it is being crammed down my throat. For example i have my truck for sale in autotrader. ihave received 5 fricken phone calls from dudes who spoke spanish and no english. WTF?? are they expecting for me to speak spanish? if they dont speak english then they should have found a friend to call me and not expect me to find a translator.

last month we went to Sonic and in my kids meals were little books that had pictures of things like fruit, vegies, cars... and the for each picture the word for it was written in spanish...

Home depot now have on their isle signs whats in that isle in english and spanish.

I lived in Germany for 4 years and except for signs at the train station or airport i did not see any german/english signs, menus were in german only, the german people made you speak and learn german.

You're making references above to a "... master race..." in an attempt to link my position to Nazi Germany.

That was the point of my reference above...

now for real... if you can't recognize your statements as even slightly twinged by racism... then nothing I or anyone else will say on this topic will do anything to make any sort of point.

edit: and no... i don't think anyone should be forced to learn any language. but... given population trends and whatnot it'd be a good idea to learn SOME spanish or SOME french...and really just SOME of every language just to be prepared.

but being pissed at HEARING another language anywhere is just shallow and closed minded.

do white people speaking spanish make you angry? or is it only the brown ones?

no my opinion in this is racist and you will not shut me up for calling me that. that term is so fricken over used and missued that it no longer has the meaning it once did. so tell me how me gettting pissed at how much money our nation spends on illegal aliens with welfare, school, medical, legal fees racist? I dont give a crap if the illegal is Mexican or Canadian, or from Figi. In my world if you come to this country illegally you will be sent back from whence you came. The use does have a Immigration policy and people DO {oh my gasp} come in legally. why cant the Mexicans? because everything is handed to them, there is even a booklet that the City of Denver hands out that tells the illegal on what to do to get a green card and how to get legal advice to prevent deportation if they are caught.

That is just wrong and it is destroying our country from the inside out.

Caring about your country doesn't mean taking a xenophobic stance. If you truly care about the future of the United States, you should want to learn several languages and you should want your kids to learn several languages, so that you and your descendents can help this country continue competing in the global economy. Isolating this country in an attemp to solve problems like illegal immigration (and outsourcing) is just going to hurt the United States in the long run.

Holy crap.

(a) You can't get welfare if you're here illegally.
(b) They can't come here from Mexico because of US quotas as well as the fact that Mexico makes it very difficult (often impossible) to leave. IF it happens, it takes years and years, while their families continue to live in poverty and poor health. Stop being so naive to assume that you just fill out some forms and the US welcomes you with open arms, while Mexico waves good-bye and wishes you all the best. Do you honestly think they just would prefer to share an apartment with an insane number of others, dodge Immigration Services, get paid below minimum wage out of fear of being reported, etc etc? There's a reason they resort to it, and it's because they CAN'T gain legal citizenship.

Exactly. Illegals can't vote, can't run for office, and can't mooch off welfare. I don't see how they're taking over the country at all. They're even doing the jobs that we don't want to do.

Nice point there! Wow, you've really opened my eyes! I'm amazed at your ability to formulate such a formidable argument. I concede to you, sir-by this latest addition, you've provided hard evidence proving your superior knowledge of the topic at hand. I mean, the method of taking the points that I made and responding with absolutely no rebuttal other than faulty personal attack...pure genius.

By the way, that's great how you quote yourself in your sig. Do you flex for the mirror, too?

No, he's not serious. He's twisting his words. Citrix says he knows that there is an influx of illegal workers because these laborers come to the town to do work during the season (only for 2-3 months) and then the town becomes a ghost town.

So the only Mexican person there during those times must be an illegal?

At the same time if this is so WIDELY known why not call INS to come to town since every mexican 'looking' person you see for those 2-3 months HAS to be an illegal that's raping the system.

There is a big difference in saying there is a problem with some people, and another to say all those 'yellow, white, red, black, etc' people are a bunch of ....

IMHO if it's so intolerable, why doesn't he move?

One more thing to add...

This is america...if you seriously expect not to wonder around and see/hear other languages/dialects you are in the wrong country if it's going to offend you.

I feel English should be our common tongue, not because I am a white supremest, but because a 'land' needs one. If the people vote and decide it's Chinese, well I will be doing some reading.

However, the Spanish deal is BS to me. 90% (a made up statistic...but the point) have to drill down on menus to choose are you English or Spanish.

I love to travel in America to the local little havana, little china, etc.

Yeah, because anybody with an accent has to be illegal. 😕

BTW, most naturalized U.S. citizens I know speak with an accent.

Too many are missing the freaking points and bringing up things that are anti-american and racist, which really muddles the water in a topic like this.

Now not all the originally came to American decided to learn english...hence why there were and are the 'Little Chinatown' areas in the country. More often than not, these groups has a spokesperson that would travel into town when the community could not be self-sufficient. This still exists. And that is fine. We are a free land.

The problem I have, and many others are having, is the Spanish groups are now wanting to have their 'Little Havana' and also require the rest of the country to communicate with them in their own tongue. They are leaving their areas and then blaming others because they didn't understand the rules/instructions because they were not in spanish. So then spanish rules/instructions are added and they are let off blameless. I don't see the chinese people, the french, the italians, etc pushing for this...even in areas that they have a significant minority population. I don't know if it's the culture or what, here in florida it's mostly the Cuban population pushing for the changing of the official language of Florida. What's even more shocking is the younger groups (30's and younger it seems) now talk about HOW GREAT Cuba is and even how's it's much better than America! 😕....your freaking older relatives FLED the country and would not go back, however; if it is SO GREAT why are you staying in Florida? To me that is very anti-American, and they are usually the ones to start racial slurs against the white, brown, yellow, red, etc people (colors used as example).

This is a huge problem for other foreigners who are trying to learn english, but now hear spanish and get totally confused and frustrated. I don't want to hear it constantly in the stores/malls (I live in S. Florida) as it's annoying to hear things you have no understanding of, may as well go down the line at that point with german, french, italian, etc...but the point is I am sure these people would all mention how pointless it was and an annoyance. I am all for this though in Hospitals, Transportation centers, and the like.

Even worse, and I am not the only one that has experienced this, is when you are confronted by a spanish person who insists on talking to you in Spanish, when you state you don't speak it...then they get ANGRY that you don't.

This has happened with people behind the register even, people that should be working to help a customer not argue with them. Now Creole is another growing one in food service around here, sure it's fast food, but when they cannot understand what I am ordering that is a BIG problem. However, no one is trying to make Creole our official language.

I feel we have done enough with the 'You are OK' mentality where everyone gets something, even if they shouldn't really have it. I say come to America, live the way you want...but if you expect to work where interaction with others takes place, or expect machines should have instructions in your own language...you came to the wrong place if you aren't wanting to read and speak english.
