FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Northern California teacher says he doesn't want to hear a common courtesy in his classroom.

He's even lowering students' grades if they say "bless you" after someone sneezes.

Steve Cuckovich says the practice is disrespectful and disruptive. He's banned saying "bless you" in his high school health class in Vacaville.

What a great crop of teachers we have these days.
First suspending a student for an opinion during an open conversation and now a teacher punishing students for extending a common courtesy.

Hard to imagine how our public school system is failing to educate our children with self important douchebags like this within its ranks.

If I were in that class I would plot for the entire class to say bless you until everyone had Fs.

From article:
After parents complained about students losing points for saying "bless you", Cuckovich says he decided to stop the practice.

However, the teacher says he will just find another way to discipline students for saying "bless you" in class.

I'm sure it was more than just the parents urging him to stop the practice, like the school districts attorneys for instance.

I'm wondering what the discipline will be now. Either way, if he does anything, its going to end in a lawsuit. This is what the product of liberal, lefty loony institutions gets you for quality of teachers these days. If it wasn't about religion, why bring that up at all?

It may possibly just be that 30 kids saying bless you after a sneeze is genuinely disruptive.

Yeah, two teachers out of roughly 3.8 million in the United States. What a "crop" indeed. Really, what is our whole education system coming to?

It's the Rights job to demonize all labor especially when it comes to teachers and public workers look at my State for a prime example of the Koch bros/ALEC Agenda. I don't think the GOP will need to worry about getting their votes anytime in the near future ;)

What makes you think the GOP are worried about those votes in the first place? :sneaky:

Given the apparent ease at which Diebold machines can be hacked, getting votes should be a non issue for the GOP.

Bless you has an understood subject that isn't spoken. Anybody know what it is? From Whom is the blessing supposed to flow? That's right, God, who has no place is a secular classroom right? But maybe the real war should be to get God out of the pledge which you no longer are forced to say, right. I mean, any rational person would question if God exists, no? Who takes anything anymore of faith? Time for superstition to end in the modern age, eh? Knock on wood.

I love proving pre-existing political beliefs by anecdote...

That said, this teacher is a dumbass.

I think the phrase "bless you" originated because people believed your soul would escape during sneezing, and the "bless you" was to stuff it back in. This was Dark Ages shit. Today, I don't think anyone religious or not uses that phrase in the original manner, it has become as societal courtesy custom. I never hear someone add the "G" word in front of it either these days.

I know this is only one or two teachers, but if the religious connection is so thin to non existent that a little tolerance is in order. After all, it is a courtesy phrase, not a convert to protestant or whatever religion phrase now days.
