If a student wears shorts they are told to put pants on if they have them or told to wear pants the next day. Yesterday Augsburger's son, Sam, wore shorts.

"He got pulled from class and made to look through his locker and had his backpack searched to find pants," said Augsburger. "The school is kind of bullying him and making him wear pants so much so that he wore pants today because he didn't want to be pulled out of class or be embarrassed in front of the rest of the school."

I don't see what the issue is really. This is a middle school, students should be old enough to know how to put appropriate clothes on for the weather yes? Let the student wear shorts in the Wisconsin winter. They'll learn real fast its a bad idea . . . especially when a fire drill and scheduled and they stand outside for a hour or so. 😛
 
We weren't allowed to wear shorts at all in school. They changed that sometime after I left. AFAIC, it isn't the school's job to dress the kids, and if they want to wear shorts in the winter, they'll either enjoy it, or not, but it's the child's decision.
 
I had a friend wear shorts year round in jr high & high school in NY, he never complained and neither did any one else. I did a lot of the time too, as long as you've got a good jacket it didn't matter.

Question, had you gotten a cold, allegedly from exposure, would you or your parents have filed a suit against the school? Seems retarded, but there's been more inane suits filed these days.

That /shouldn't/ be an issue. Knowing this shit hole of a country the way I do, it /could/ be an issue. If that's the reason why they're banning shorts,, people are focusing on the wrong thing to fix.

Was ~20 years ago, nope. Now schools are more concerned with covering their asses in any conceivable situation.

I wore shorts all the time as a kid in the winter. Admittedly, it was pretty dumb, but my legs were the last things to go cold.

Now, I'm a wuss and wear pants year round. 😳
 
Pretty stupid. I remember when I was in high school, one week it was in the upper 70s in January (in Virginia, usually 30s to 40s). I wore shorts and people were acting like I was crazy for not wearing pants and a sweater or heavy jacket still. WTF
 
When I was in school, we were not allowed to wear shorts, sleeveless shirts, open top shoes, girls could not wear shirts that were above the knees,,,,,.

I say we go back to those strict dress codes - problem fixed.

even if i was a billy badass and didnt get cold being naked, i would still dress appropriately for the season so people didnt stare and gawk at me like i was a dumbass.
its kinda like wearing clothes from the 1700's. its socially unacceptable and your put into a "judged" category from every person you cross.

i remember i had to wear a pair of boxers over my boxers cause i forgot my shorts. good times.
 
Well at least they can still wear clothes they want besides winter. Detroit went the uniform dress code route.

That parent in the video is making such a big deal out of this. I thought he was about to cry at the end.
 
uniforms do solve a few issues. from poor kids who can't afford trendy clothes, to the boys who get boners in class cause some chick is wearing less than she should for her age...things like that.
kids always find other ways to express themselves besides how they dress.
 
There was a kid who wore shorts every single day I knew him in middle school. In winter - in Michigan, in -20F at the bus stop. He walked through unplowed snow with moon boots and his bare calves.
