I'm a complete noob. (Don't hurt me.)

Been thinking about starting with something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BCFUBU

I realize it's not high end (plastic instead of stainless steel and glass, branded refill kits, etc.) but I'm wondering if I could still expect not-to-crappy, consistent results from it?

Is there anything else I should worry about? How about smells during fermentation? My garage is above freezing most of the year, but I live in Minnesota, so it's cold. Is it better to keep it all climate controlled?

What questions am I too n00bish to know to ask?

Thanks

Have you checked out any local brew supply shops? They're your best resource. I generally caution against using the smaller kits like the one you linked. Smaller batches aren't as forgiving and you go to a lot of effort for a small amount of beer. Brewing in 5 gallon batches is a reasonable amount and doesn't cost much more. If you don't have any local supplier, I can recommend brewyourownbrew.com
