School me on airsoft guns

pontifex

Lifer
Looking into possibly getting some airsoft guns to set up a little carnival style shooting gallery in the basement or back yard.

I know nothing about airsoft guns. What do I look for? What do I avoid?
Good brands, bad brands?

I'd like semi-auto pistols and rifles, maybe even full auto for some extra fun.

Chinese stuff is cheapest. Taiwanese stuff is best. Japanese stuff is overpriced neutered garbage.

GBB pistols and rifles are the most fun.

You have been schooled.

why are gas blow back the most fun? More realistic?

Seems like an extra added cost to buy gas cartridges all the time.
I had a bb pistol that used co2 cartridges and it sucked because the cartridges didn't last very long, and forget about storing it for any length of time with a cartridge installed as it leaked.

Yeah, they're just more entertaining. AEG's use an electric motor, some gears, and a piston and cylinder. So no moving bolt, and a whining noise mixed mixed with a 'ka-thunk ka-thunk ka-thunk' rather than a 'rat a tat tat' and such.

Cheap AEG's are going to have crap gearboxes. The parts are often okay, but the tolerances are atrocious. It really pays to be able to work on them and get them functioning buttery-smooth.

A lot of the people who start upgrading the stuff end up just breaking it. Then they complain about how terrible the gun and the expensive parts they bought are. Meanwhile, I have some $100 guns that run like fucking sewing machines and have never had a failure.

There's really not much work to be done gas guns, in comparison. not much you CAN do, besides upgrading the barrels. I highly, highly recommend barrel upgrades. The difference between a stock barrel and a 6.01-6.03mm barrel is astounding. Even in a pistol with a 3-4" barrel, stock to 6.03 makes it like a laser. 'Green gas' is pretty cheap. Propane (same damn thing, although it's stored at a little higher pressure in regular propane tanks) is stupid cheap. But it smells like farts and you shouldn't really use it indoors, regardless.

there are plenty of websites, forums, and reviews.

the basics:
mechanism
material of manufacture
cost of accessory/ammo

guns are divided/classified by mechanism of firing: springer, gas, electric
all use a pneumatic pressure system to launch the plastic ball, but how the air/gas is delivered is the defining factor. springers have a manually cocked spring powered air piston. electric have an electric motor to cycle the piston/plunger. gas use a valve system to release precharged gas cartridge. springers are cheap, electric is in the middle, and gas is the most expensive in general.

materials: plastic for the cheap stuff, metal alloys for the expensive.

accessories: you will typically need to buy extra mags, ammo, batteries/gas, and a charger if it isnt included with the gun. some gas guns use those precharged capsules, others can be refueled with a cannister of gas. electrics can be upgraded/customised with better internal parts to increase fps and wear.

the best starting point for your plinking gallery would probably be to find a cheap plastic $100 electric gun in 6mm with a hopper magazine. you refill it like a squirtgun by just opening a cover and pouring in the balls. most have an option switch for full auto and semi. play with it first before committing to the fancier metal guns.

They are great. For 9 year olds.

'Cause you can totally shoot your friends with real guns.

Actually, on further thought...please go run around the woods while your friends shoot bullets at you.

LOL SILLY PAINTBALL PLAYERS, YOU JUST USE THOSE GUNS BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BUY TEH REAL ONES.

🙄

Except paintball is fun. And leaves marks so you know when people are hit. Plus it hurts, which gives more reason to use tactics. Airsoft is fucking silly. I've used them plenty in training and I'd rather just hold plastic and yell "bang bang"

Yep. The gun looks 'real" and all, but in terms of a game paintball is so much more fun.

The "tactics" are more or less exactly the same. Except its a lot harder to cheat in paintball and much more satisfying to hit someone.

I remember playing speedball, and I got jumped by a damn guy who unloaded in my chest at close range(<15 feet). left 12 massive bruises on my chest and it hurt like a sonofabitch.

Made me feel so damn alive.

Uh. Unless you change clothes after every round of paintball, it's exactly the same. Well, except the airsoft guns have better distance/accuracy.

'You got paint on you!' '...that's from last round.'

...just don't play with dickbags and your problems are solved.

And airsoft hurts plenty. Local games here use 425-450fps limits with .25g BB's and no minimum engagement. Take a burst in the face or neck and then let me know how you totally can't even tell you've been shot.

edit: FYI they're both fun games. It's just annoying to see people judge something they've obviously never done.

The paint wipes off well, so there is no chance of paint being transferred from one game to another.

As for paint Yeah, thats on skin. When I'm wearing a jumpsuit crawling through the brush high on adrenaline, I can't feel a BB hitting me.

Paint balls, you KNOW when you're hit due to the mass of it.

And yes, I've played paintball and airsoft. Paintball is so much more fun as a game.

Nope, you've obviously never played either. Fucking liar.

I am happy to fling different types of balls around with you fellas, and we can see who gets the most swollen and bloody.

...Giggidy.

simunition is where it's at but it's a little hard for private citizens to get their hands on if I remember correctly.

Do they make guns that aren't military style guns? Can you get like Old West guns (lever action rifles, single action pistols) or even modern civilian style guns with iron sights?

I haven't seen any of those yet but I haven't done much looking either.

I learned this one the hard way - don't buy anything made by Double Eagle.

I've also got a cheap springer MP5 and it fires with enough pressure that you will feel it even through two layers of clothing from 100ft+ away.

Welcome to 1998.

No one spends cash to import inferior guns from Japanese shops anymore. You can get a ~400fps KWA from a US retailer for $300 or less. Pop in a $40 barrel upgrade and you're able to be plenty competitive.

Doesn't even take that much, but those guns are rock-solid and you're talking about roughly the same cost as a creaky plastic Marui AEG.
