Thanks, that's good know. I'll look into it but I'm not a fan of home assistance either even though everyone tells me our house would be awesome with it....sigh...

I feel like an old man because of this though. haha I can see the benefits of a smart home and I know our home would be even better because of it but man the privacy issues alone make me very hesitant about making the transition from a dumb home to a smart home....
 
The only thing I need to be smart in my home is my thermostat. I can control my cheap sensi thermostat from an app on my phone. Turn off the AC or what not if I forget it on when I leave, and turn it on when I head home so it's cooling when I arrive. After that maybe some lights. But none of the features of a smart appliance appeal to me and they just shorten the lifecycle of the product anyway.

Home assistant is open source, doesn't have the privacy problems.

Yeah not a fan of that stuff at all. I wish smart appliances would mean that it runs a basic web server that you access locally, but noooo they always have to do the stupid cloud BS and require an account and all that. I'm not looking forward to a point where you will be forced to connect practically everything you buy. With 5G I could see it where lot of devices will just have 5G built in, so it will connect whether you want to or not, bypassing your firewall in the process. They will get bulk service with the carriers to make it happen.

I can tell you this: I've been a high level IT engineer for 30 years. I've also used all of Google's services since their introduction (even worked on their beta products). I have smart speakers and smart devices all through my home. Never once in my 15+ years of using these devices/services have I had any kind of breech, privacy violation, or anything that made me feel uncomfortable.

These services are free, and to fund them the data (which is mostly anonymous) must be monetized. Everyone wants their own personal R2-D2, and that's what Google Assistant is to me. I have tracking turned on on my phone that lets me track client visits via Google Timeline to keep my timesheets straight. This tracking also automates things like heat/air conditioning when I get near my house, can trigger music or lights, and other things. Smart speakers allow me to have whole-house music that plays the same thing on all speakers. In the morning I get a gentle alarm that then reads off my schedule, traffic to work, and any news stories I've been interested in based on my browser history.


I have smart lights, smart TV's, Google WiFi, cleaning robots, Nest thermostats and smoke detectors, smart screens, and smart appliances. My family loves them and they're incredibly convenient. In exchange, I get targeted ads in Gmail and banner ads on websites. That's about it. I've had no other bad experiences. Most people that have had weird security breaches had to do with weak passwords. I highly recommend turning on 2FA for ALL of your cloud services to keep yourself safe.

No, they really don't. I have no desire to talk to my computers, nor to have them talk to me. I do want a whole-house music system, but nothing else you've laid forth appeals to me.

I thought everybody already knew this as well, water bath is obvious and used frequently.

If your chicken regularly turns out like the top one you don't need a new kitchen gadget, you need to learn how to cook.

Edit: WTF. That ad says the dry chicken is cooked at 220°C for an hour! No wonder it's dry and burnt!
