School LAN

OK. the situation i have right now is that I am at a university and in my dorm room we are on a LAN. People somewhere surrounding me that are on my network are hogging the bandwidth during peak hours. the only time i can have no-lag during online games and downloads is like 3am in the morning. Is there a way i can set my priority higher or something. I am in CAL and i play counter-strike 1.6 on tuesday nights at 9pm est. this also happens to be the prime time that these people keep downloading their porn and whatnot.

Contact your school's network admin for help. You may not discuss ways to override or defeat their network settings.

you really need to talk with the school.

many times games are booted to the bottom of the barrel bandwidth wise and there is nothing you can do to prevent this.

you have people downloading stuff to thank for this normal policy.

ill tell you what to do.... get one of those big grey bins on weels they have for when you move in, get one of those, google for your local beer distrubitor, grab a friend with a truck, or a car with a decent sized trunk or back seat,(and someone thats 21) go get yourself a keg or two (preferably two) get back to your dorm, (park in the back where noone can see you) take the keg(s) out of the car/truck put them in the big grey bin on weels, cover with a blanket or towell get the bin back to your room add a tap, cups, ice, and music and good times will come... usually alot better ones than what come with counter-strike

well, I did have a few keggers in my dorm.

man that is tough...

getting a keg of beer into your dorm. But it's worth every penny.

It shouldn't take too much imagination to see that if any single machine could arbitrarily prioritize its traffic over the traffic of its peers, then you would have a very big problem.

Or maybe no problem at all, since every machine would declare itself a priority and you'd all just be fighting harder for the same share of bandwidth.

As was suggested, talk to your school admins. Though I'm guessing they're not going to go out of their way to help you play Counter-Strike. That's probably not in their mission statement.

Oh, I could see the debate raging in the IT department.

"torrents and bootleg music, or gaming?"

They'd die laughing!

must be easy to hack your friends computer on your LAN.. lol j/k.. you cant prioritize your own connection.. talk to school admin and complain about it maybe..... most likely will lead to worse situation.. ex: all port blocked except port 80..... sorry not sure how to help..

Why would they try to stop you drinking beer in your own room?

please talk to your school admins about this horrible situation. they will probably respond like: "Counter Strike. i can't believe we forgot to block it. Instead of blocking it all together maybe we should just throttle this morons bandwidth down to 56k speed"

that is exactly how that will go. want to play online games get a cable, DSL or FIOS connection and enjoy.

I think some dorms on some campuses are "dry."

take the kegs down to your admin before talking about counterstrike problems

gee what happens when said admin is too drunk to help student? this plan might be slightly flawed.
