LANCASTER, Pa. -- The School District of Lancaster is defending a plan that groups students according to their race.

In December, McCaskey East High School placed its junior class in different homerooms based on race and gender. Each class is led by a home room teacher of the same race and gender who serves as a role model.

The idea is based on research that shows students with strong mentors do better in school.

"We said, 'Hey, the data shows that some of our students are underperforming. Can mentoring help them in both attendance, grades and standardized testing?'" said McCaskey East Principal Bill Jimenez.

This is interesting. I think that it is not that crazy of an idea in theory, but I think that in practice they'll run into a lot of problems, for example trying to categorize biracial children, or sticking Spanish students in with Mexican and Argentine students just because they all speak Spanish.

Students need to be divided, but not based on race or gender.

They need to be divided based on aptitude and drive. Students who want to learn should be grouped in with other students who want to learn, and should be given the best teachers. The students who don't want to learn should be sent to a trade school.

Dividing based on race and gender is stupid. There are correllations which show certain races/genders to underperform, but race and gender are definitely not causal factors in that. Culture is, maybe, but definitely not race.

This is a stupid social experiment that will fail because it doesn't accomplish anything.

How are you going to determine this? Another standardized test? Shit is ridiculous.
In most states (maybe all, I don't know), there are already enough standardized tests in place to accomplish at least a broad categorization and limited tracking. The only problem is the education establishment is dead set against using the data in certain ways, as they are only just now starting to recover from the self-esteem trance.

when I was in school, we had standardized tests...they were crap, related to nothing we were taught, not sure how we were supposed to pass them...

Of course they were crap, but some other kids weren't quite as puzzled as to how to pass them. (Especially the part about punctuation!) That's kind of the point. ;)

Seriously though, I didn't mean to say that the tests as implemented today (or, worse yet, ten or thirty years ago) would be appropriate for tracking students. Tests for evaluating curriculum objectives are a rather different creature from tests for evaluating aptitude.

I have this great new idea, it's called segregation. The black students will have to use the black bathrooms and won't be allowed in the white cafeteria! I am a genious!!! give me 5 billion dollars! seperate, but equal, yes, that's the ticket.

This is one of the most terrible ideas in the history of this country. I am disgusted.

When the south tried this, the whole country was in an uproar. But now that a northern state is doing it, its going to be ok.

Uhhh most teachers worth their salt know which kids get it and which need more help. They also know which kids which are becoming bored and need some higher level teaching. Unfortunately in our current system the goal seems to be mediocrity. I'm sure a combo of testing and observation would make this selection/division easy.

The ones who mature later will be put in one class for life, this is EXACTLY how the school system worked in the Soviet Union and how it works in NK and China today, the elite in every category is separated and the "useless" are the ones who get the jobs that require very little talent to do and get paid next to nothing for it.

I don't think it will even work outside a Communistic dictatorship since it isn't suggested in ANY science that the kids who are the rowdiest are the worst students when they mature, people like Einstein would have gotten a crappy education with this proposal.

Equal opportunity is something that EVERY western nation preaches, it seems like it's working better than the old Soviet Union style with elite classes that you are advocating.

Unfortunately, the bolded will result in the same ending: Asian kids in one class, and the rest in another.

Absolutely horrible. When I was in school, there was a lot of diversity, and everyone in my classes made friends with everyone, there were no racial divisions. If divisions, such as those proposed here, had been implemented I would of had like no friends. D:

They have done studies that show boys and girls learn differently at younger ages.
