School Computer Project Ideas

The second semester has begun at our school, and I have a course called technology leadership. Basically a self-guided course, you have to pick a project to do for a few months, do it during that time, keep a log of all activity, and at the end of the period of time present it.

I need an idea for the project. Anything that is possible with school equipment is valid. Our school equipment is pretty limited, though. Mostly PentiumIIs, some PIIIs. Students don't get to use the P4's. :'( Stuff like setting up a Linux server, networking, building a beowulf-like thing is good. My knowledge with computers is pretty limited, though. I'm familiar with all the parts of computers and how they interact and stuff, but don't know anything really technical like how the electronics work and how the stuff on boards work. I have extremely limited experience with Linux, basically just installed it and used it a bit.

So... any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

We pick the project. We make it up. We basically have to learn something from it, tell what we learned. For example, I could pick learning javascript. Or cpu overclocking (not that though, too expensive). Or setting up an appache server. Or learning php scripting. Or flash design. Then we research it, figure out how it works, do something with it. Present an outcome of our work.

Sweet, you get to surf pr0n with the dean? That's not so bad...

What do you guys think of setting up a cs server with live stats, psychostats, everything like that? Too easy? I wouldn't know since I've never looked into that.

It isn't any easier for someone else to dream up a computer project for you....

Maybe learn about cryptography. What is a PGP key? How does it work? Make a flow chart.

What about a Folding project? Or is it something you have to create?

Hmm, ways to circumvent the schools filter to be able to look at porn then?

Google image search, hello?

Not if they use the same software that we use at our school; it blocks any backdoors like that, such as Anonymizer, Guardster, Google cache, and Google images. Not to mention most web-based emails, popular message boards, and also has the famous Netgear domain blocking, which blocks such "nasty" sites as dickinson.edu (if you don't see why, look at what word can be found at the beginning of the domain).
