Clint McCance, vice president of the Midland School District in Pleasant Plains, Ark., told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Thursday night that he will resign his seat and is sorry that he wrote on his Facebook page that gay kids should kill themselves.

"I would never support suicide for any kids," McCance said. "I don't support bullying of any kids."

When his comments were made public via gay magazine the Advocate, McCance said he received "thousands of phone calls, hate mails, people threatening to kill my family and me." He claims his wife and two kids have moved out of the state temporarily to escape the harassment.

"I'm reaping what I've sown," he said. "I've had a lot of hate speech thrown at me and my family on every level."

At least he did the right thing, even if most likely for the wrong reasons. My sympathies to his family, catcalls to those threatening him and especially his family, and kudos to him for stepping up and admitting that this harassment is his own fault.

I agree with him having first amendment rights, but as a school official publicly direct these things toward kids? I think he's unfit for the job.

In this instance, he didn't want to wear a purple shirt to "raise awareness about harassment and bullying against gay youth." Why does it have to be for gay youth? Why not include all youth? It certainly would have gotten wider support.

I agree, no one should have to support a gay agenda. (The Devil's a rich guy, he can afford two Advocates, right?) I totally support his right to not wear a purple shirt, or to wear one with bright green pants, or to insist that this day be about all kids committing suicide rather than just gay kids. But for expressing such outright hatred, no apology can suffice. For expressing the view that gays should all kill themselves, no apology can suffice. And for being so stupid as to think he can post such stuff in public and get away with it - well, no apology is needed, but it's another reason to run him the hell out of Dodge.

I applaud him for resigning, and for manning up and admitting this shit storm is what he himself has sown. But he's got a long way to go before he climbs back up to the level of just a typical asshole.

The bullying really is about all kids though. If you think about it, what is probably the most common name a bully calls their prey? I'm pretty sure it's along the line of lovely human or queer because being immasculated apparently really gets under peoples skin.

It's just that the kids who end up killing themselves are the ones that are gay because this taunting makes them feel absolutely worthless. Meanwhile the nongay kids getting bullied understand they aren't actually a lovely human or a queer and eventually don't let it bother them.

On the subject of this asshole, hopefully he never gets in another role where he is involved with the education of children.

The First Admendment protects speech from control by the government, Senate. The Federal government did not get involved in this situation.
