sad part is op's scenarios are mostly true.

The sad part is that most of them are so exaggerated or just plain untrue that it detracts from any message there might have been.

this.

I enjoyed reading the Kindergarchy article though - that was more unbiased, especially at the end. At the beginning when the author was going on and on about how he had free reign over Chicago as a pre-teen and softly alluding that this was a preferable way to be raised, I about had to stop reading. All in all he kind of seems to get it, though he is guilty of too much romanticizing.

SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2007

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.
2007 - Pedro 's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro 's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

False. How many Pedros would you expect to find in a US public school in 1957?

besides, this list should be updated to 1958/2008.

I had hispanics in my classes and schools 1962-1974. None of them were named Pedro though and they didn't know they were any different from the rest of us much less that they were "hispanics".

2007 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

I know several older people who have reported this to me, claiming they kept their shotguns in their locker for after school hunting. I told them shens and they didn't understand me.

During hunting season, there are rifles in pickup trucks at school parking lots in northern NH. Kinda freaked the Secret Service out when they did a security sweep for a presidential campaign visit. :p

I was in a one sided fight in highschool. I did not fight back because I did not want to get in trouble. I just dodged and tried to flee until it was broken up by the teachers. I was suspended. I told the principle that next time I would knock the kid out because if I was going to get punished, I wanted to be punished in style. Next year, same kid, new fight. I am struck from behind because apparently I said something a few days back he didn't like. I turn and drill him until he is out cold. Principle asks me to explain my actions. I remind him of our conversation. I've never seen someone so pissed off before.

My dad thought it was very funny.

He is not far off though. I used to take a bus to downtown Alexandria every Friday night by myself for a Boy Scouts meeting when I was 11-12 years old and pretty much had free run in the summer as long as I was home for lunch and supper. I watch kids today being herded around clutching their mothers like chicks with hens and really feel sorry that they will never know the simple childhood pleasures of exploring the woods and creeks around their neighborhood catching tadpoles or caterpillers and all the other things my friends and I spent our after school time and summers doing.

The same thing happened to me.

Except in part one we called the school board and the principal got an ear full and apologized / did not suspend.

This happened a couple times at my high school. I graduated in '04. Principal was out in the parking lot and saw guns in the trucks gun rack. He went into the kids class and asked him to take them home. No problems at all.

I agree, this is pretty much true. The more bureaucratic and twig-up-their-ass these institutions are, the truer these statements are. We just have a lot of lousy paper pushers running our schools, educating your children for you, telling them what they can and cannot learn. That's not healthy, nor is it right. Half of its the unions, and half of it is people too willing to entrust their child to an institution run by the government.

Very true. The exaggeration really killed the message

I don't think any self respecting 12 year old didn't have a pocket knife and didn't know how to play mumbly peg.

1957: Mark is colored. He has to go to a special school for colored peoples. He does well, but is later killed by a lynch mob led by Ben. Ben goes on to run for Senate.

lol @ smoking docks... I remember teachers smoking in the classroom well into the 80's :p

I agree. I grew up in the early 90s and man were times different. My parents, although strict, gave me some degree of freedom. Me and my buddies used to stroll around the neighborhood freely. We used to go through the park and just have fun even though there were a bunch of homeless people/drunks who lived there. It was heckuva lot of fun...
Heh...I really wonder the lives kids live there right now are like..
