was wondering if any of you who are currently in college or have already graduated received any scholarships. were these scholarsips given to you for academic achievements or sports? or did you seek out the scholarships yourselves and apply for them. also, are websites like fastweb.com a good place to get scholarships?
 
As an undergrad the CS department had a merit scholarship funded by alumni.

For grad school if they want you the you have a good chance of getting RA or TA funding, plus there may be university scholarships and the department will usually know about them. If you're really good the National Science Foundation has merit scholarships.

Most of the ads for "$10 BILLION in unclaimed scholarships" are close to scams. 90% of the scholarships are for very specific people like the children of employees at one company. I believe the info they're selling is also available at any decent public library.
 
Look for government-instituted or -run scholarship programs. They have lots of money up for grabs.

E.g. in Canada, we have the Canadian Millennium Scholarship. I managed to get one of the many Provincial Awards (and I'm in Ontario, so competition was more fierce than, say, Nunavut 🙂 ).

Also, check with the university/college you're applying to; they most likely have a lot of entrance scholarships that MAY OR MAY NOT be automatic. Don't miss the deadlines if you have to apply!

Lastly, check with local companies and organizations to see if they offer scholarships. Maybe the workplace of your dad or mom offers a scholarship. Investigate EVERYTHING and apply to as many as you have time for.

Small scholarships may be easier to win than larger ones since fewer people bother applying. It may be better to apply to many small scholarships and win them than to waste time on applying to a large scholarship with lots of competition; you'll have to see how much time you can devote to the scholarship process.

I was a Regents Scholar at UCSD (awarded for aademics). Money for this scholarship was given out based on need (and I got some).

my daughter gets 4 scholarships for academics.. 1 from national merit, one university funded one for national merit, one from the university for academics and one from the state.. enough to pay for everything and give her some pocket money (less this year than last, but still some.. which is good, as part of the leftover will go to pay the taxes). she was within 20.00 of the max she could get last year, and didn't apply for anything else for this year, though she should have done.. she'll fix that next year, applying for some of the scholarships offered by her department. as costs go up and her scholarships stay the same, the gap between what she gets and what she could get grows larger, might as well fill that up if she can!
 
I have The Florida Merit Scholarship - 75% paid for my 3.2gpa in high school, and my 990 on the SAT 😛 Florida will pay for ANYONE to go to college 🙂
 
there are a lot out there if you seek them out. if you (or whomever you are interested at the behest of) are still in high school then the counseling office has tons of info, usually.

Mississippi State
University of Southern Alabama
Louisiana State University

I picked Ole Miss. One of the worst decisions I've made.

These were all academic.
