Schlage is solid. Kwikset is a total joke. Took about 2 seconds to break into my apartment. I had a set of bump keys on me, and so I bumped the deadbolt open. Slipped a credit card in to undo the handle, and I was in. Pathetic. My roommate was like "Uhhh don't tell anyone?"

I have Schlage on my front and back doors, courtesy of our builder. My daughter accidently locked us out one day. The locksmith could not pick the front door lock after 45 minutes of trying. He went to the garage lock, and had it open in 5 minutes. The garage lock is a cheaper model.

I will only buy Schlage from now on unless someone can show me a better lockset.

Kwikset Avalon

This is the one I bought at lowes clearanced out for about 50 or 60 dollars. I believe my original lock was a baldwin, but it couldn't have been a good model of theres.

very few break-ins are lock related. Most are window/door/door jam related. Unfortunately today's door jams are not as beefy as they should be. Best thing to do is to get a steel door. Maybe get one of the extra wide/long strike plates and use 4" screws. You might have a better chance.

Ended up with a Schlage deadbolt. Not bad for $35 and only took about 10 minutes to install. Thanks everybody!

when I was building doors we added a steel plate to the backside of the frame that the deadbolt fit into. this plate was attached to the frame with 8 screws. if you are getting new doors ask for a deadbolt reinforcement plate. ours were custom stamped for us locally and every door with a deadbolt got one. Thats the sort of thing you dont get from home depot.

Shlage and Kwikset are industry standard. Just get an ANSI grade 1 of either and you'll do okay. If you are broke and must purchase an ANSI 3, then examine the keys and look for one with multiple peaks/valleys (this will make it slightly more difficult for the amateur lock picker) and install it with the cylinder upside down (this will also slow down an amateur lock picker as well as negate bumping).
