Schlage, Kwikset, Master Lock or Defiant?

Luckily it broke when I was going out, not when I was coming in. The whole internal mechanism just crumbled, some no name builders model POS.

Are Schlage locks really worth twice the price of the Kwikset models? I also saw Defiant and Master Lock models, but hadn't heard of them before so didn't pay too much attention to them.

I always look for the ones that are certified to the highest security level. Cost doesn't matter for things like this.

I just got Schlage locksets and like them. They also have a lifetime warranty so if that ever happened to you again you could get a new set free.

Aren't they the master of combination locks though, not deadbolts?

You will notice the difference between Schlage and Kwikset right away and even more as time goes by.

Worth it imo, but then again, so is Baldwin over Schlage.

I assume Grade 1 ANSI is better than Grade 3? Seems backwards but based on the prices I see, I think 1 is higher.

We have a separate handle and deadbolt, with only a lock on the deadbolt.

Kwikset makes a Grade 3 handle and deadbolt combo, so it would have two locks on the front door for $40

Or Schlage makes a deadbolt by itself, $30, Grade 1.

Better to have two locks at a lower grade or one lock at a higher grade? :)

get schlage. I use to sell them/ re-key them. the internals of a schlage are far far superior to a kwikset. they are machined to higher tolerences, they have better keys, and they are much stronger built.

You may find them at a high end specialty hardware store. The kind that specializes in cabinet hinges and high end hardware of that sort. I'd have to drive 50 miles to buy them locally here.

I don't think their website tells where they're sold.

They have lifetime warranties on the finish. Great for entry doors.

Looks like they have a dealer locator at the site.

You can buy just the lock cylinder and install it in your existing lock if you choose...or buy the entire dead bolt assembly.

FWIW, I don't think any lock is totally bump-proof or pick-proof, but Medeco is considered one of the better ones you can get.

Baldwin locksets are sold right alongside Schlage at Lowe's at the same prices. They may look prettier, but quality wise they are the same.

I got Kwikset when I bought my house (foreclosure) for all the external doors and have had no issues or complaints.

We have Baldwin locks at my parents house. The only attempted robbery was through a window.

I purchased a Schlage entry door lock and deadbolt to replace my old Schlage set after a locksmith came in and said that these were very difficult types of locks to bump and pick.

Just make sure whatever lock you purchase is easy to install (mine was), is pleasing to the eye, and has a high rated anti-lock picking/bumping mechanism.

Does your entry door have a window in it? If so it doesn't really matter what lockset you put in.
