my favorite movie...like everyone said, it's powerful. just after that movie alone, I would consider liam neilson (sp?) to be one of my favorite actors.

edit: another good liam neilson movie is les miserbles but the phantom menace was pathetic.

Wangel,
Schindler's List is not a movie you watch for amusement, it is a movie that educates about the Holocaust. It is an excellent movie, even thought the death and the portrayal of the Holocaust is gruesome. I went to see it in Germany in the movie theater because I wanted to, the other times I have seen it were all in school for educational purposes.
It is supposed to have a permanent affect on your brain - you learn what has happened in the past, and hopefully will learn from that not to let the same thing happen.

Well, in the book Schindler is not such a hero Spielberg made him. But that's no suppride really, that hollywood doesn't see things from both sides..

I wrote a paper once on whether I thought Schindler was a hero or not.

Anyways, it's hard to say which one is better. The book and the movie are different. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other. The best thing would be to do both - watch the movie and read the book.

I have to dissagree. The book offers a more reflective view of Schindler than the movie. There is more room for what you, as a reader, think of him. The movie, on the other hand, tells a hero story, and that is too narrow, in my opinion. But I agree that it's worth reading the book if you liked the movie.

Exactly, Lowfat. That was precisely my problem with the movie.

Very profound and disturbing film... I do recommend that all people need to see it. Another film of this genre that was well portrayed was The Hiding Place, not as disturbing but still conveys the same message. Works like this are very important to us as a society so that we'll never forget the mistakes of the past and the dangers of misguided nationalism. I don't see how anyone couldn't believe in true evil after investigating what happened in the holocaust.

On a different note.

I agree that Liam is a great actor. Watch Rob Roy and Michael Collins (if you haven't already), good stuff.

No matter if you like the way schindlers character was displayed or not, you cant argue that the movie doesn't help make people aware of how brutal an even the holocaust was. Many young people, including americans, probably don't realize it and this movie just helps to show them what people can do each other. Perhaps some even reconsider their own prejudices after viewing it.
