Who has or has not seen this? I watched it recently for the first time. What are your thoughts on it?

Wow loogie, interesting statement, I wonder if you're refering to those who were cruely stripped before eventually being mass murdered.

I thought it was an excellent movie.

Excellent movie, obviously. I will say... When I got up to switch tapes, I said to myself (literally) "I just don't know if I can take one more point-blank shot to the head." Depressing stuff.

sad as the truth of the content, a VERY good movie.

I also suggest 'Life is Beautiful'. If you enjoyed Schindler's List, I guarantee you'll laugh (and cry) at 'Life is Beautiful'

I agree with IBHnU statement RE: Life Is Beautiful. If you like Schindler's List, you'll like Life Is Beautiful as well.

Both great movies!

I didn't think Shindler's List was a very good movie. Life is Beautiful was great, though.

IBhacknU,
Life is Beautiful is a beautiful movie, but if you want to learn about the Holocaust, it is not the movie to do so. Especially the concentration camp scene doesn't portray the conditions accurately at all.
If you want a movie that you can learn from about the Holocaust, watch Schindler's List. If you just want a beautiful movie about an Italian guy - watch Life is Beautiful.

loogie
I am appalled.

<< but if you want to learn about the Holocaust >>

I couldn't agree with you more toolgirl.... 'Life is Beautiful' portrays the Holocaust in a very sugar coated way. 'List' is much more in your face, and real.

It's good, although the book (Schindler's Ark) was better IMHO.

The best holocaust literature is probably Primo Levi though.

btw, to step in in Loogie's defense, I think he may have been referring to the 'intimate scene' between Schindler and his mistress, and not the Jews being stripped prior to execution. At least, I sincerly hope that's what he meant.

We watched both for a Holocaust class I took. We analyzed them and stuff.
That was like the 4th or 5th time I had seen Schindler's List. I think everytime I watch it there is something else that I hadn't noticed before, or something that impacts me in a different way.
I guess I just like the movie because it shows that not all Germans were Nazis and stuff. You would be surprised how many stereotypes there are out there....

I agree with fdiskboy, everyone should have to watch this movie, especially in high school. Where I went to school, I was taught only the basics of the Holocaust, and had no idea of the extent those people went through to eliminate the Jewish community. And seeing someone living it out on screen brings it home to you so much more than a textbook ever can.

snow patrol & IBhacknU: Thanks for the tips. Now I am going to have to order the book and rent Life Is Beautiful. :)

The book is totally different from the movie though, IMO. I only read it once and a long time ago, but I thought that it portrayed him differently.

Are you talking about Kinealy's book, 'Shindlers Ark'?

"btw, to step in in Loogie's defense, I think he may have been referring to the 'intimate scene' between Schindler and his mistress, and not the Jews being stripped prior to execution. At least, I sincerly hope that's what he meant."

Don't be an dill, he was trying to be sarcastic, either that or it was a weak attempt at irony.

Afterall, its obvious he was kidding about.

Gez, you people take everything at face value.

There is a book out called Schindler's List. I assume that's what we were talking about.

Toolgirl, the one I have is Schindler's Ark. Mine is an old edition though. I assume that the Schindler's List book will be the same, with only the title changed to make it more recognizable to those familiar with the film.

It's by Thomas Keneally.

I read a small overview of the film and have no desire to see the movie. Watching death and cruelty might be your form of amusement, but not mine. Watching cruel acts has a permanent affect on the brain.
