It's a great move for the Sox. They're getting a guy who is committed to winning, who's a stud in the postseason, and they're adding depth at baseball's most important position - pitching. Not to mention Schilling has an incredibly positive impact on the younger guys in the rotation.
Very, very, savvy move by the Sox.
I couldn't agree with you more, but one day that bubble is going to burst and I'll admit I thought he was over the hill until the post season proved me wrong.
Even if he's over the hill, having six real starting pitches is a wonderful position to be in. He's not going to be a 20 game winner anymore, but if he can deliver 150 innings of 3.5 ERA baseball, I'm okay with that.
I don't think the Sox will use a pure 6 man rotation because that will limit Beckett's appearances. Instead, I think we'll see a modified five man rotation. Beckett and Wake will start every 5th day. Dice-K will too (unless he shows signs of fatigue). Buchholz and Lester will fill out the bottom of the rotation and I'm sure Schilling will spell them rather frequently.
Plus, having Schilling and Tavarez (if he's back) waiting in the wings in case of injury is great news.
Like I said before, this was a savvy move that basically adds insurance against tired arms and against injuries.
