Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's much of a shoulder there, but at the very least I would have given it some throttle and gone for the lane to the right.

And as for the guy not having insurance or a license, I'd sue the fucker for everything he has.

I'd bet a million dollars that fucker has a cell phone though and that he was texting or yapping away on it like almost every other asshole on the road...
 
Even in my car I was generally more concerned with the people behind me than in front of me when emergency stopping. There wasn't much a trunk back there and sports cars can dramatically outstop appliances, especially though which haven't had all their maintenance and such done properly. I do agree that the motorcycle driver severely screwed up by laying into his brakes the way he did, he needed to get out of that lane.
 
He was just as inattentive as the car behind him. You see smoke coming from his tires, or more specifically his rear tire. He would have dropped the bike if he locked the front up hard enough to smoke.

Rears lock up easy. I can skid my rear with just top gear engine braking because there's so little weight on it when I grab front. You can't equate locking up rear with front because weight transfers forward under braking.

Agree he doesn't know how to ride -- stomping on rear is fail. By the levelness of the bike it looks like he didn't grab front at all. But still, his fail braking was sufficient for that situation
 
I'm actually surprised that when all those cars stopped after he was hit that another accident didn't take place.

Actually, it did. Look at the white HHR/PT cruiser 5 cars back.


I got hit twice while stopped at the redlight, and almost got hit again yesterday. People are just following too close and not paying attention.
 
I'm always keeping an eye on the car behind me. I simply don't trust people to know how drive properly.

Try to keep an out available at all times, watch the guy behind you, and be ready to split lanes if some jackass does something like that.

in scenarios like this you usually don't have time to check behind you, looking in rear view mirrors on motorcycle is a lot harder to focus on and register "car not stopping behind me" or "car is stopping behind me" than in a car.
 
Instinctively, the very first thing I do when a situation involving braking is developing in front of me is flick my eyes to the rear view mirror to assess to what extent I have to take into account what the clown behind me might or might not do.

It's also why I regularly take militant steps to shake tailgaters.

If they can pass me, I pull slightly to the right and motion them with my hand out the widow to do so. If it's a two lane road with a double yellow line, I repeatedly show them my brake lights. If that doesn't work, I start actually braking down with increasing severity TO GET THEIR FUCKING ATTENTION.

But yeah, checking your mirrors is harder to do successfully on a bike.
 
Generally, yes. The officer can't charge them with much more than following too close for conditions; *maybe* some sort of 'reckless driving' charge that costs them $300 and a few points on their license.
that's not enough of a deterrent imho.
Here if you get involved in an incident that you didn't cause because you were following too closely the car in front of you that got in the accident first, you lose your license for 3 months.
If you caused it, further measures will follow.
You can choose when to spend your 3 months without driving if you really need it for work though.
If there is no incident there are no "following too close" fines though.

In Italy they sequestrate your car until they're finished with the investigation.

nope. its very easy, and something that come pretty naturally after riding a while and doing it. i will always ride left or right of the lane, watch the mirror as i slow down to see what the car behind me is doing. its easy enough to tell if someone isnt stopping, and its a quick throttle and lean to the side that gets you out of harms way. i got showered with coolant a few times in traffic when i jumped out of the way and the car in front of me got hit instead. one guy even tried to blame me, almost started a fight in front of the cop over it.

i gotta say, while getting blasted with small bits of front end and rear end parts, with a bunch of scalding coolant sucks, it is much more preferred to getting squished. all you riders out there, pay attention. most people in cars are not.

I watch drivers more than the cars themselves.

As long as the windows are not too dark or the view obstructed it isn't hard to see the driver. From there it is pretty easy to spot the ones that are eating, putting on make-up, reading, talking on a cell phone, texting, talking/arguing with passengers, or just sitting there slack jawed. You can also predict turns and lane changes based on head movements and mirror checks. At least with the ones that actually bother to look before turning or changing lanes.

It isn't always idiot car drivers hitting motorcycles either.

I almost got hit once while stopped at a red light, by a motorcycle. I heard the locked up tires and glanced in my rearview to see the guy coming in hot with locked tires and almost laying it over. This was when I had my Contour SVT. I just goosed it into the intersection and the guy ended up stopping without falling down, in the spot where my car was.

Blame you for what? Not acting as a cushion between the cars?

All that said, be careful out there fellow riders. Keep the rubber down and the shiny side up.

Amen to that, regardless of what you ride or drive.
