scanreg problem in DOS

I am having a problem running Scanreg to try and resolve a registry/config problem I am having.

History:

WD HD stopped booting up and would say non-system disk error.
I scanned it for viruses and check the HD using WD program and scandisk in DOS. All was OK.
I did a SYS command using the WIN98 SE bootdisk I had and now I get the registry problem at Windows startup and I have to exit to the command prompt.

It tells me to run scanreg but when I do it says I do not have enough memory. I have tried booting up with a startup disk or just going straight to a command prompt and I get the same error. I also tried to run scanreg from a Windows 98 CD but the prompt disappears and the CD does not boot. I have to re-boot to continue. I can access the HD in another computer but don't really know what to do from here. I am trying like hell to not re-format this thing.

Any suggestions or help ...

you probably need to load himem.sys from your boot disk.
try a: SCANREG /FIX

tell us what happens

Thanks, I will give it a try. I thought this would be ok with 98 but I guess it could be corrupted or missing. I will try it out.

Thanks

I tried copying the himem.sys file over to the c: from the boot disk. I still get the same error. I read on the net that maybe the config file could be corrupted but if I do try to edit the config.sys file I get the memory error.

I am trying to reinstall windows again but it is hung up scanning the registry. I will let it run over night but I don't expect much.

What the crap could be causing these problems!

Thanks

did you format ? or just trying a layover install? if not format it and if that doesn't work you might want to fdisk and move the partions slightly.
good luck

No, I was trying to keep from formatting it. It ran all night and was still hung up this morning. At this point I have decided to format it and forget about it. I have tried too long 🙂

BTW, should I format in DOS or put the drive in my other computer and format in Windows?

Thanks

will it showup ok as a slave drive ? you can atleast get any info you need from it first if it will. i don't know if makes a differance , but if your going to format go all the way and do'er in DOS.
good luck

I was able to get the info off the computer as a slave drive on another computer but unfortunately the owner does not have back-ups of the programs or a recovery disk for drivers. Got to love it 🙂

Thanks for the tips ...
