Scanners Vs Modems

My friend has a 500MHZ computer system running windows 98 and everything works perfectly well and he also has internet access.
The problem is that when the HP scanner is installed on the system he can no longer get a dial up connection. Anyboby had similar problems with scanner and Modem conflicts?

Have you tried another slot for the modem? Maybe an IRQ problem.

Is the cpu an AMD?

Is the scanner usb?
