Scanner PSU wiring question

First of all, I hope this is the correct place to post this.

I have an old microtek scanner with a built in psu. I am trying to convert it to a lightbox for my wife, she will use it to trace. What I am trying to do is use the psu, light source and fan that were part of the original scanner. When I hook up the power to the light and/or the fan the light blinks and the fan starts and stops. I have tested every possible connection with a digital multimeter. I can post the results if anyone needs to see them to help me. The lead combinations that register a voltage very from about 18v to 2v per combo. I assume this is where the blinking and fan issue are. Voltage is dropping too low to power the devices.

Does anyone have an idea of how to resolve this? I thought it would be cool to use all of the original parts to accomplish this, I could just rip it all out and drop in a hardware store lighted cord, but that's the easy way out. I am going to continue to research this. If I find anything out, I will post it here.

Thanks,
Art

Hi, A really good idea, but I doubt if the original strip light will be enough illumination. Your second idea of adding another light source sounds like the best solution. Luck, Jim

Thanks JimPhelpsMI for the response.

Here is some more info. It's an 8" florescent tube. It puts out a lot of light when it is on. I'm also going to paint the inside either silver or gloss white.

Anybody have knowledge on power supplies and why this one has fluctuating volts?
