Scanner makes scans with colored bars all over - HP Scanjet 6300

My friend scanned an image on her HP Scanjet 6300 this morning, and this is how it came out: http://dailybuzz.net/streaky_image_HPscanjet6300.jpg

It's got color bars all over it, in a checkered / striped pattern. It almost looks like how a bad CRT monitor might look if the cable were loose or something.

Any ideas what might be causing this? It's worked fine for her in the past.
