Help, tried to install my parallel port HP scanjet 5100c with my HP xt878 (AMD 1.3 GHZ) running Win ME. Bought the approved HP CDROM install disk. Installed software, shut down computer, hooked up scanner and turned on computer. Got good scanner logo in right hand lower corner but USB optical mouse locked up and computer locked up when I attempt to scan.

Any suggestions?

In ME, open Control Panel/System/Device Manager, and highlight COMPUTER. The click on the PROPERTIES button and look at all of the IRQs being used. Your USB mouse may be in conflict with the scanner. You can probably solve the problem quickly by replacing the USB mouse with a PS/2 mouse . . . which uses IRQ 12 by default and never conflicts with anything.

Many USB mice come with adapters so they can also be used in the PS/2 port. That is preferable, IMO.

The symptom suggests you have both devices trying to share, and they don't necessarily do that in spite of what ACPI would like.

USB mice have another failing . . . they do not run in DOS when you use an emergency boot disk because USB does not work in DOS . . . only Windows.
