Plextor made the TDK 12x, then TDK switched to Sanyo for their 16 and 24x drives. Sanyo makes fine drives.

Anyone know why BestBuy.com seems to have the Toshiba SD1700 out of stock? Are these being end of lined or something? I want to get one for my pops with some gift certs I have (tried to use them on a tv order - long story - major pain, gave up and trying another order). I really dislike BestBuy.com - their customer service asked me for my password and logged into my account via the web to perform a reorder. How dumb is that? Then they got the order wrong because they didn't look at the first one carefully. Then they couldn't do anything about it because "we can't do anything about it" and "you can only use gift certs in store or order again" etc. What a stupid company. I don't blame the CSRs but the business people who run BestBuy.com within the Best Buy corporation. They must be idiots.

you must be reading my mind. I just don't know if the 0% makes up for the price difference for ordering it elsewhere on the net.

Quite true, buy.com has it for around $750, but it is on back order.

I have the TDK 24x burner. It is a great burner, although it doesn't work with XP's native burning (no big deal, it comes with Nero). Anyways, The 24x burner with the blue tray is a Lite-On (checked the fcc # on mine and it definitely is). Someone told me that there is a 24x with the normal white tray, and it is a Sanyo. I havn't seen any of those. Great price. I will likely pick up another one.

HELP! I bought a used(open box) one at $99. Can I go there tomorrow and get the rebates? Or will they not honor it because it was used? I dont know their policy. HELP! Should I just go and return this one tomorrow? What do you guys think? This was the only one they had, and they didnt even have any TDK price tags on the shelf.

Update: this MOFO is still in its original packaging, none of the software included has been opened. This is a brand new drive as far as I can tell. Someone who knows their policy please tell me what I can do. If I can get those rebates, then I get this drive for a sick azz deal of $20.
