Aren't most stuff sold through a classified ad pretty much sold 'as is' and the responiblity of the buyer to make sure everything is working and to their satisfaction?

No wonder you didn't give the full details in the OP.

First off - smart move buying an Xbox 360, a console with well-known quality issues, without verifying that it worked.

Secondly - we should probably confirm that it's actually broken, because you don't seem too swift. Some people turn on a 360, see 4 red quadrants and think their console is dead (so much so that I believe MS eliminated that error code in more recent versions). What actually happens when you turn it on? 3 red quadrants? Nothing at all?

Thirdly - if you have 3 red quadrants, check the manufacture date. Unless it's over 3 years old or the other guy opened the case, it's still under warranty. Technically the warranty only applies to the original owner, but MS has been lenient on that. They've also been lenient on opening the case, because a lot of people opened them before MS extended the warranty.

Have one of your friends "buy" something of his, and set up a meeting, preferably at the same mall or wherever, then all of you guys show up, with the XBox, and tell him to give your money back. You might even suggest that something bad would happen if he didn't. Try to meet somewhere near an ATM so you could convince him to walk over to the ATM to pay you back. Strength in numbers.

Avoid violence, though. Hinting at "something bad" might work. Threaten to follow him home, maybe have some friends pull up in a car, maybe one of them could carry a baseball bat, etc.

This might be terrible advice. Ultimately you could consider this a cheap $140 lesson that will save you from making a more expensive mistake like this in the future.

Did you graduate 8th grade?

In all seriousness, I think you should report his CL postings and call it a day. You probably won't get your money back.

How old is the dude?

He told you it was broken when you bought it.
You said you only wanted it for parts.
You only paid $20 for it.
See where I'm going with this?

DID YOU NOT SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO OJ SIMPSON RECENTLY!?!?! You are suggesting serious crimes to countermand something not so serious.

I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree that fighting is "immature" in this case. It's a natural response to severe injustice. I'm not saying it's the answer anytime you're wronged, but this guy deserves an asswhooping, plain and simple. I'm not saying I advocate it or would resort to those measures if I were in the same situation, but calling it an "immature" response is... inaccurate, in my opinion.

Yes, we live in a civilized society... but there's nothing civilized about ripping someone off like that, and uncivilized actions lead to uncivilized consequences. A weak "eye for an eye" argument, perhaps... but I don't care :) .

Where do you draw the line between that and beating your girlfriend for eating too much of your ice cream cone?

bitch had it coming. :p

as for this, id probably strong arm him with a few buddies from my darker past. theres a reason they make 120vac converters to use out of a 12v cig lighter socket... easy to set up and test anything with a bit of prep. if you had whipped out a 7" monitor and a power strip, i bet the guy would have never taken a step near your vehicle.

If I scammed you and you fooled me into coming to the mall and tried to assault me I would call the police and laugh as you got thrown in jail, then I'd spend the money I stole on hookers and blow
