Scam on Craigslist...?

After getting an email telling me they were interested in something I listed on Craigslist I got this... (second email)

Thanks you for the response according to the description, am okay with
the price and the condition pasted on cl. I am ready to make instant
purchase. My mode of payment would be in Certified Check and i will
arrange for a local pick up as soon as you get the check, because that
is the only convenient means for me and due to my work frame i can not
be able to get there and i promise everything will go smoothly. I
really wish to be there to check out the item but i don't have chance
cause am very busy woman (Nurse). Concerning the pick up, i will
arrange for it after you receive the payment and it clears... Pls get
back to me with below info so that i can proceed with the payment
immediately if you are selling to me.

Name:
Street Address:
City:
State:
Postal Code:
Phone Number

And as soon as this is provided, the payment will be overnight to you
and i will let you know when its mailed out. Thanks and i hope we
handle this in good faith because this is my first time on the list
while waiting to hear from you. i will add an additional $30 so that
you can hold it for me till you get the check

Best Regard

Susan Peterson

Is it me or do they seem to be getting better at this crap...? First one was short and sweet but a totaly different tone to this one and wanting a bunch of crap with nothing given... The average smoo would almost say "ok" and give their left nut DOH...!

But hey she might be hot...

OP, if you have to ask/post ...

I love CL ... when I am not dealing with scammers and flaky sellers. I've spent so much there I can no longer keep track ... but every purchase was a great deal.

It seems a bit suspicious since it's so wordy and she offers to throw in an extra $30 without you even asking, but if she's suggesting you wait for a certified cheque to clear before she sends someone to pick it up locally, what's the risk?

Why bother with the hassle of risking a bad check? Just deal in cash and deal locally.

And it's not just wordy, but has the bad grammar of a scammer:

be able to get there and i promise everything will go smoothly.

Geez....you really are one of those proverbial suckers, aren't you? You really think that "certified check" is anything but a computer printed fake check, not certified by any bank....but certain to bounce.

I've got a few of those "certified checks" in one of my desk drawers from scammers doing the exact same thing....all are just printed with check writing software on blank checks bought from OD, OM, wherever, and written on real accounts from which the scammers have "boosted" the acct. no. and routing no. from.

One idiot who sent me a check didn't even bother to change the default starting check number in the software.....check #1001 from supposedly an account at a firm that dates back 75 years.

But I love making them waste $15 or so overnighting the check to me via UPS or USPS.

Susan Peterson? She's cool. I sold her sister Anita a sausage maker on CL. She said she really needed it.

How to tell if it's a Craigslist Scam:
(1) Is it on Craigslist?
(2) Are they paying by Certified Check?

If the answer to both is yes... it's a Scam.

LOCAL AND CASH ONLY!!!

Now this has something I could use... But whats funny is she or...? Has my name already but I`m not giving anything else unless I used another addy...? Really like to stick it them some how... $15 is not much but their time and such is... 😉

Hey, for shits and giggles, (since what you are posting isn't personal information, but rather, a fake account used by a scammer), post the email address of the scammer who sent that very generic email to you. Assuming you're not stupid enough to put your real address on craigslist (and use their forwarding service instead), we could all send the scammer a reply.

Bad grammar? Check.
Overpayment? Check.
Item is for their child who is oversees while buyer is in Europe somewhere (or Africa). Not Check.

hmm....confused. 😀

I finally got a physical US address from one of the scammers to send the USPS money orders to. Did a quick online background check of the address. The two individuals there... wow. Found mention of their criminal backgrounds - let's just say they're two people I wouldn't want to meet in an alley. So, I sent a final email to the scammer: "hey, what are you trying to pull? My bank says the check came back as a fake check, after they told me that the check cleared 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, I was able to run to the post office and retrieve the money order from the mailman just before it got sent out. Our business is done."
