I have an 80 pin Atlas 10K drive with the SCA or low voltage plug. This drive was designed for Hot Swap. Has anyone used the 80 pin to 68 pin adapters? If so is there a performance hit or can they be relied upon to perform as they are designed? Also where should I get one? What else do I need to know.

Thanks,

You can get them from places like HyperMicro for about $12. If you get a good adapter, it will work without a degradation in performance. If you get a bad one, it may not work at all.

Just make sure you get one for LVD if it is U80 or U160, use an LVD cable with terminator and LVD controller. Ive used many of them and rarely a concern. Most problems are related to loose connections. Im running a pair of SCA 15K.3 in a raid box using the adaptors with no problems right now.

I use them with no problem - they are passive devices that just rearrange the pinout so there should be no effect on performance. I bought mine on eBay from a seller named Yoozinha and they are LVD compatible (to U160 at least - you may want something better for a U320 drive) - very inexpensive. They were under $10. when I bought some and are now $2.50 each (but they make it up on shipping ;) )...

There are definite differences in SCA adapters. The main advice I have is: you get what you pay for. On a fussy drive, cheap adapters can cause odd issues or not work at all. They also make dual 50/68 pins versions.
These generally work best on 50 pin drives though.

I gave up on looking for the cheapest and found these. This was the only one I found that would work with a Seagate/Dell drive that irritated me through 4 different sca adapters.
