They could charge $150 and people would still buy it.

This. The nerdrage on here is ridiculous, and bogus. I'm in for a CE and my brother is building a new PC just to play this game. He won't be the only one.

they've been set at $50 forever and all these companies have been doing just fine.

I realize that, but salaries and inflation have been pretty steadily increasing decade on decade.

http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

"What cost $50 in 2000 would cost $61.68 in 2009"

"Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2009 and 2000,
they would cost you $50 and $39.04 respectively. "

If you really want to freak out, remember when Final Fantasy II and other premier SNES games (SF2, etc) launched at $59 and $69?

"What cost $60 in 1992 would cost $90.61 in 2009."

Of course, with SNES games there was the cost of cartridges, and the high-megabit versions cost more to produce. Also the Nintendo licensing fees was $$ as well. Still, you have to admit that considering the ever-increasing complexity/sophistication with gaming over the years (doesn't often translate into more fun-factor, but that's another story altogether), that gaming is a relative bargain.

It's just something to remember, $60 for a game that took many thousands of man-hours to produce is nothing to get aggravated about, and the $100 Special edition is just there for the super fans. I wouldn't and won't buy either, but I could easily see myself spending $60 for Diablo 3 or a hypothetical Elder Scrolls 5, Fallout 4, Heroes 6, or whatever else has entertained me for countless hours before. I've spent $60+ in a bar or restaurant countless times, and that only lasts for a little while.

now that's about the dumbest defense yet.

Edit ^^ see my post above.

Christ, can some of you people get any more arbitrary than bitching about a $50 standard price point? Who wrote that law?

When I was in school I was always broke, but I don't recall ever griping about the price of games even then. Video games (the good ones at least) are and always have been an incredible value for the number of hours of entertainment they provide.

But I think I'm gonna hold off on some of the single player only games from now on until they drop in price some. $60 for Assassins Creed 2, despite the fact I loved the original, is just a bit much for the number of hours it will entertain me.

There will be exceptions, like Bioware RPG's or another Elder Scrolls...etc. But the others can wait for a Steam sale. Of course, this is made easier by the fact I'm addicted to MW2 multiplayer which doesn't show any signs of wavering anytime soon. :)

I don't mind $60 games, but I don't buy them unless I know it is good or I am really anticipating it coming out.

I will buy SC2 easily for $60, but I haven't bought many PS3 games in a while because the price is just too high for me.

And some games(heavenly sword comes to mind) don't give "hours of entertainment", it only gives 6 hours(from reports) and no multiplayer. From that standpoint, there is no chance I would pay $60.

What the gaming industry need to do is charge less for certain games that lack the depth and longevity. I mean, it takes years for games to retail less than the $60 they started. I buy much more games on PC because of steam sales and other good deals. Consoles don't do that and I almost never buy games because of it.

You didn't answer the question and I think both parts of what you did reply are suspect. "Just fine" is a throwaway concept. You'll probably still be doing "just fine" financially if you pay $500 for SC2, but does that make it a good idea? What makes consumers more valuable than suppliers in your worldview?

Looking at my steam account, I see a vast array of products ranging from $5 to $99. These prices are roughly correlated with how much consumers want to purchase them (demand) which translates into how much they are willing to pay. The most expensive single game is Dragon Age Deluxe Edition at $65.

How do you think the demand for Starcraft 2 compares to DA: Deluxe Edition? Should it be priced higher or lower than DA as a result?

Yeah, a lot of other games I wouldn't buy for 60, but I know I'm going to get butt-loads of fun gameplay hours from SC2.

I am considering getting the CE too...

We'll have to see.

You people need to admit that you are getting old. What cost a nickel back then is now worth a quarter. Everything inflates. I still wish gas was $0.95 per gallon like it was a couple decades ago.

Thank you! I was beginning to think everyone in the world had lost their minds. It would be nice if the cost of goods never increased, but inflation is basically unstoppable over time, wages go up as well.

Even things that don't seem like they've gotten more expensive, like burgers and sodas, are actually paid for by extensive subsidies through taxation and gov't farm bills. That 99 cent burger is made from beef that is fed corn, corn that is cheaper to buy than the cost of production due to the subsidies, ditto the HFCS in soda.

With the high costs of hiring programmers, artists, developers, lawyers, musicians, advertising, etc, I'm shocked it's taken this long for game prices to start to steadily go up.

I figure somewhere will have extra cool stuff if you pre-order or buy on opening weekend. The CE looks cool but the only thing in there I'd honestly get any value form is the dog-tag flash drive. I'd have preferred otherwise worthless knickknacks.

I'm aiming for a free t-shirt or something when I get my regular edition.

while i enjoyed SC1 i will wait until its a battlechest. sure it may take a few years but i can wait.

$60 is not to much for a game that you feel is worth it.

I remember when a gallon of unleaded went aboe $1.00 and people were freaking out.

But, as I stated numerous posts ago, when I purchased a PC game in 1995 for $50, I am extremely greatful the price point has only risen $10 for big production games. And even then, with all the sales that happen, you can get the games cheaper if you wait a couple weeks. That will likely not be the case for this title, but others it may be.

I'm not even 30 yet and I remember when I started driving I could still regularly find gas at $0.80/gallon and sometimes even cheaper.

How are the 2 expansions going to work? Are they only going to expand the SP, or are they going to create 2 separate groups of MP players?

I would assume all players will be able to play against / with each other, but with certain maps being exclusive for each title. If it works like WoW, which I assume it will, your account will simply upgrade and you'll have the other content available.

maps should be free to dl so i don't think mp will have exclusive maps. you dl the map once you join a game if you don't have it.

If that is the case, it won't matter which you purchase (because I believe they are not expansions, but independent releases), you can enjoy the multiplayer against anyone. Except of course, when you get matched up against some Koreans. It no longer becomes enjoyable when you get completely stomped.

Actually, $60 seems like a fair price to me. A lot of entertainment for the money.

Pre-ordered CE for $75 from Gamestop using coupon code from this thread. Only catch is you need to get your pre-tax total over $100.

possible bad move....last time i pre-ordered from gamestop when there was no release date set, they ended up screwing me out of my order and basically told me to fuck off.

Best of luck to you.
