SBS 2003 R1

Hi,

Does anyone know what the default limit on SBS2003 R1 for the Exchange mail box limits? I've been told its 75mbs however upon checking the default within Exchange Manager System it gives me the option to set the limit?

Thank you

SBS 2003 R2 has a limit of 75GB with a registry hack for the mail store.
Increase Mail store limits

As for indivdual mail box default limitations, the limit is 200MB by default with warning messages starting at 175MB or about 90% of mailbox size limit.

Minor correction/FYI; the increased Exchange mailbox limits are a function of Service Pack 2 for Exchange, not R2 or SBS.

As noted, the determining factor is SP2 of Exchange.

One weird limitation, even with SP2, is that you can only set a maximum mailbox limit of about 2 GB. Any higher limit is rejected. If you want mailboxes larger than 2 GB, you have to turn OFF the mailbox size limit.

Be aware the RESTORING a 75GB mail store could take a LONG time.

Another good thing about SP2 is that the Store size is determined by the actual messages in the Store, not by the physical file size. Before Exchange SP2, it was possible to need an offline defragmentation (which can take a LONG time and will shut down Exchange in the meantime), just to reduce the physical file size below the Store size limit. You caould have a fragmented, but near-empty, mail store and Exchange would still think you were over the size limit.

Thank you everyone. I can confirm the default of 200MB with a warning set at 175MB is correct. I'll be moving to a proper Exchange with a transition pack so hopefully I can feel the full benefits of increased options.

Any advice to pit falls during the transition period?

We have roaming profiles, most of the biggies have been seen to. As for the mailboxes, we're using the default so that should be no problem. User data and shared drives might be more difficult to replicate especially with the permissions side. Can these be replicated easily bearing inmind, it will be transferred from 2 domains to a new domain and server.

Yes, thanks for the fix. It is SP2, not R2.
