SBC Yahoo! DSL problems

Okay, ive had this DSL for awhile, and before i would get 80-100 kb/sec dls all the time. Now however, it seems like when the dls start, they are up at 80-100. but purpousley drop down to 40 or less. I can no longer get speeds over 40. i was wondering if this is a hidden SBC thing in order to limit customers bandwidth. If anyone knows something about this, please let me know, and if there is any way to speed this up. thanks

my downstream speed is supposed to be

384Kbps-1.5Mbps

i just dont udnerstand why it feels like there is a governor on my dl speed, cause it starts really fast, then slowly goes down

At the beginning you usually get a surge of huge speed (it has to do with the ISP speed control, and the way the browser averages the ?Speed? reading).

Link: www.ezlan.net - Measuring the "Speed" of Internet Connection.

If your contract is Down "Speed" (from the Interent to you) of 384Kb/sec. than the 40KB/sec. that you get is Right.

If your contract is Down "Speed" (from the Interent to you) of 1.5Mb/sec. and with an optemized system you get only 40KB/sec. than call the ISP and complain.

should i only call if 1.5 is my minimum or what? I mean, EVERY other person in my town with this DSL has the same problem. It starts ncie and high, and everyones goes to 40 and sits. I remember when i was the first one to get dsl in the town, and it was super fast, but now it sucks, why might that be? I have called before to upgrade my package, and they said that the faster speed isint available in my area

wow, i checked out that site, and since my dls are at 40 kb/s, if i multiply that by 10, thats 400 kb/s downstream, only 2 kb more than the MINIUMUM for my play. Is it me, or am i getting completely jipped by SBC?!

A bunch of people I know and I have SBS Yahoo DSL. The intall package/software that comes with the DSL is horrible, it installs all sorts of crap on your computer and it is a pain to remove. If you are still using the yahoo/sbc connection manager to logon, i suggest you buy a router and have the router logon for you. Then erase all the sbc/yahoo crap off your computer. All my friends and I have been getting pretty consistent download speeds close to the max. Our plans are the 384-1.5. we usually get much closer to the 1.5.

good luck.

thats the thing, i do not use any of the stuff they gave me. Simple DSL modem and awireless router to connect. I still get cruddy as dl speeds. wtf mate

Has anything changed? Phone cable? Network setup? Are you running these tests from a computer that is plugged into the router, or connected via wireless? Also, as part of your testing you should allow the line to "re-train." The simplest way to do this, and in some cases the only way, is to unplug the dsl line from your router, wait for a minute, then plug it back in. Unplugging the power cable would accomplish the same thing. Many DSL modems and routers do not actually retrain the dsl link when they are rebooted.

Since a lot of people in you area are getting the same Low speed, it is probably not your personal problem.

ISPs (just like Us) play around with their systems. It might be that for what ever reason they did Not care about limiting ?Speed? in your area and now they do. The fast strat and slow down indicates that they probably have a capping system.

Since your contract is defined as 384 to 1.5 they are within the boundaries of their contract.

In addition thier refusal to provide High speed contract in your area shows that they have some technical problem to do so.

Why at the beginning they could provide High Speed and now they cannot? Who knows? But it can happen.

If you have a better alternative go for it. Otherwise to not shorten you life span by this extra non-productive worry.

The good news regarding installs and SBC is that the new software doesn't install all the garbage like the old software does.

The new disk actually asks something like are you going to setup a router or do you want to install connection manager software (select no if you are going to us a router).

Excellent news.

I would recommend you run a speed test from a WIRED (not wireless) computer. You can find speedtests directly from yahoo at their help site (help.sbc.yahoo.com?). If you are under 384, you can complain. At one point my SBC connection dropped from 1.5 to about 300, to about 100, and eventually ended up at 8kbps for a few days. I hate SBC.

ok, i definately should call them, take a look at this test i took at dslreports

2004-04-09 18:42:33 EST: 304 / 99
Your download speed : 311396 bps, or 304 kbps.
A 38 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 101808 bps, or 99 kbps.

wow, i am getting jipped

The good thing about using SBC's speed test is that they cannot dispute it because they provided it. You can then submit the speed to them automatically and receive a reference number. Use that when calling them to get quicker results.

so, should i call them and complain or what, like what do you think they will do, cause i dont think they can magically make my internet faster. Dont they have to move the central point thing?

They can send a tech out to your house. One time a tech found that I had been on a wire drop that was like 50 years old, switched me to a new pair, and massively increased my connection quality. (But this was just a packetloss problem, not speed.) There are things they can do. Call them. If they can't fix it, get your money back or something.

Will they cancel your service for complaining? Ah, I can see it now.

"We here at SBC believe that DSL is a privilege, not a right. We are deactivating your DSL and blacklising you. Is there anything else I can help you with?"

Call already.

ok, i called them, and i must say, i cannot stand the arabic (politcally correct) tech supports that speak like if they go above a whisper the world will explode. He was of no use to me, so i called back and got some better help. They are coming to my area today to inspect the lines, cause they say this speed is not what im paying for, itll be interesting to see where this takes me
