SBC & ATTBI? Connectivity Problems

Is SBC Ameritech in any way connected to AT&T Broadband Internet? I'm visiting at my aunt's house for a few weeks, and she has cable internet access through ATTBI. I've been downloading craploads of stuff while I'm here, since I don't have broadband at home. What I say that I've been downloading a lot, I mean that network status says that the connection has been up for 1 day, 1 hour, and 1.0004 GB has been uploaded, and 1.541 GB has been downloaded.

I answered a call while I was the only one home, and it was from the SBC Ameritech's home services office. I told them that my aunt would have to call them back, and she gave me a number (which rotors to the collection office).

My question is, are the two services connected somehow? Could I have exceeded some limit in downloading?

I'm a bit worried... thanks a ton!

i dont think so. collections? maybe she forgot to pay her phone bill?

1GB up/1.5GB down? you must be using P2P software or something huh?

It does look like she forgot to pay the bill. I can't believe that she would have though. Very strange.

You hit the nail right on the head with the second line. Kazaa rules!

ATTBI and SBC (I dunno if Ameritech is a division, branch, or just the full name of the company) aren't connected, no. ATTBI does not have a download/upload limit per month, so you're safe there. You don't have any reason to worry. Your aunt, on the other hand, might. Collections agencies are brutal. Plus the fact that if it actually goes to Collections, your credit is pretty much effed.

Yeah, I have his aunt's account in front of me right now and it's only going to take me about 8 minutes to have the feds knocking on his door. ;) :p

Ameritech is a division of SBC (along with PacBell, NevadaBell, SNET, Cingular, etc), and has no connection with AT&T broadband (ATTBI).

FWIW

My aunt called them back. The person she talked to said that there had been an error, and that they were sorry to bother her.

And they got me all worried for nothing...

Now the strange thing is the cable connection dropping for about 1 minute per every two hours.

if you PM me the phone number on your aunt's account, I can look up possible outages in the area, but chances are that's not the case. Try power cycling the modem for a full 5 minutes (power cycle = unplug power cord from the modem to the wall out of the wall socket). If those two aren't the culprit (you may have to power cycle the modem for longer, say, a couple hours or so), then you'll need to call 888-262-6300 x 3 (I believe) and go through the normal troubleshooting flow with a tech in order to get a trouble call scheduled for a tech to come out to the house to check for radio frequency interference.

<edit> sorry it took me so long to respond, I was with another customer </edit>

It's weird cause today is the first day it has happened. I was sitting at the dinner table watching the computer screen. A box would pop up saying that a network cable was unplugged. Then it would say that the local area connection was now working. Repeat about 10 times in 20 minutes.

I think that I'll power cycle the cable modem.

Thanks for all your help!

If you're getting an actual message saying that the network cable is disconnected, it might be the NIC drivers... You running WinXP?

Make sure your cable line going to the modem doesnt split also to a tv tuner card. Mine did and I would lose my cable for about 5mins every 6 hours. O and if that doesnt fix it just blame ffmcobalt it wont make it work but it will make you feel better.

Just noticed the guy who installed my cable internet replaced a crappy splitter with a high quality one that says it is EMI sheilded, 5-1000Mhz and it says 5db.

I had a generic 7.5db splitter that was causing the problems and they also left me another high quality one but I lost it. Time to go hunt for it.

Turns out it wasn't on my end. I ended up calling the number ffmcobalt gave me, and they said that there were network problems in our area. Several other people I know were having the same problem. It finally came back online about 20 minutes ago.
