It's not a done deal yet. This has been rumored for well over a year now.

I'm hoping SBC buys out Cincinnati Bell, one of the only remaining independent telephone companies. I own stock in it, and a buyout would probably push the price up by 20% overnight.

Sorta defeated the purpose of breaking them up in the first place...

the purpose was that, due to technology, there was the ability to have competition in the LD market, but not in the last-mile 'local' market. nowadays there is so much competition in LD that it is damn near impossible to make a profit (which is why at&t has tanked), and there is local competition from cable and wireless providers. the split between local and ld provider is no longer needed.

Not really. There is competition for telephone services beyond what existed in the 1980's. For example, the ability to place telephone calls over the internet. And also cellular telephones.

Landline telephone service is a dying business. Almost everyone is losing customers, and will continue to lose customers indefinitely. Consolidation makes sense.

Cingular bought AT&T Wireless, a completely seperate company than AT&T.

SBC owns some of Cingular, along with another company.

GAH, I can't run from SBC. My VoIP line is provided by AT&T. I've been trying to flee SBC and their terrifyingly bad services for YEARS now, they keep following me. Next hiding place: VZW. Buy *THAT*, I dare ya, SBC.

VZW would flip the bird if SBC even brought it up.

SBC and AT$T to merge into one EVIL company!

The Devil is now obsolete

Oh man, you ain't kidding. I've dropped both from my private services within a year. Got rid of SBC as my ISP and ditched AT & T for wireless and went with Sprint. Absolutely can not stand either company. Both companies just full of incompetence.

I work for SBC and I have to say from the perspective of a person on the inside SBC is an evil company. In fact I've been working really hard on trying to launch my own business and get out of the company as fast as I can.

A few things I've observed since I've worked for SBC (they bought out Ameritech a few years ago)

1. Summer of 2004 SBC negotiated very badly with their union employees. The end result was a lot of wasted money and thousands of management employees (non union) worked for free to cover the striking union workers.

2. Fast forward a couple of months, SBC announces to the company that they will need to trim the management employee staff. It will begin this year when the company will outsource a cetain percentage of full time employees in exchange for contractors. ( a really nice way to thank all the employees who worked 12-16 hour shifts to cover the striking union workers)

3. Company bonuses and medical benefits have been reduced by quite a bit since SBC took over despite the company showing higher profits than previous years.

4. Upper management has put tremendous pressure on employees to sell SBC products to their friends and families. In my opinion this is a total slap in the face, considering that the company has a sales department in place. Why should programmers, project managers, networking techs, etc.. need to play the role of salesmen.

5. The company is now urging employees to contribute money to help lobbyists for SBC. Although its not mandatory its really disturbing that a billion dollar company needs its workers to contribute money to its political agendas.

Reduce costs with employees working for free and yet ask them to contribute for lobbyists. Then get a windfall of stock options/bonus for company's profit. Shrewd bunch of high-level execs!

SBC bought SNET and destroyed their historical significance by nixing the name after about a half year (Used to be called SBC/SNET, now is just SBC). Insanely large companies are becoming the norm lately... It kinda scares me.
